So I picked up this '57 371 last weekend. I got it and the trans off of Ebay for $330. I thought it was a good deal. The wife just thinks it's more junk piling up in the garage. Anyway, there are some differences between it and the other '57 371 that I have. Maybe one of them isn't a '57? The one I just got has a cylindrical canister coming off of the oil pan and my other doesn't. It also has an all metal fuel pump where my other has a gl*** bowl for the filter. Any ideas?

    Thanks - e.r.

My 62 (394/big bore 371) has the canister off of the pan, but it does have a fuel bowl too.

Thanks natas. I guess my feelings wouldn't be too hurt if this turns out to be a 394, just would have to find another project to stick it in. The 371 in my current project is kind of a non-negotiable thing. My other block has some cracks that a guy (skot) is attempting to weld up for me so I picked this new one up just in case the repair doesn't work out. Thanks again.

The oil resivor is correct to later 57's- my j-2(manifold option) came with it stock. The fuel pump is the same way- i think the gl*** ones were early and the all metal were late- they list both for 57-. In short- both those items are on my orignal motor as found.

    good score- danny

  5. That fuel pump you show, I think , is a double diaphram, where one part of the pump actually makes va***n so the wipers work better.

Thanks everyone! buick320a also helped out id'n with the casting numbers on the block and heads. It is definitely a '57. Should work as a good donor block if welding on my pop's original doesn't work out. So Darkharts, is the canister on the pan is just for more capacity?
Unclee, is one fuel pump better than the other? I really like the look of the gl*** bowl.

    Thanks! er
