Anyone Running A Set Or Have A Set Ready To Install Of Some Brand Of Chrome Steelie Wheels? I Am Contemplating A Set For The Rear Of My 55 Dodge 1/2 Ton, And Was Wondering If I Could Get The Chrome Stock Steel Wheel Look Running One Without The Center Cap...any Pics? Local Chrome Shops Want For One 15x7" Steel Wheel Chroming What I Would Pay For A Set Of Four 15x7's Shipped From The Us To Canada ! Just Curious What They Look Like Behind The Cap. Thanks, Derek
The OEM chrome wheels look just like a plain steel wheel, only chrome. Stay away from the smoothy look wheels as they look dorky and you can't run them without a cap as they are vari fit. Here's the best shot I can come up with for now........
Custom54, Are these stock steel wheels chromed, or a steelie/smoothie? They do look awesome! Both the two pics so far are the look I want, just, like I said the one good chrome shop ( in Montreal 2+ hours away from Ottawa ) the guy quoted 600 for a small MG bumper of a co-worker...so I figured they'd be looking for 125 or better for a 15X7. Although I am only interested in the rears for chrome...I want to run Cragar or Torquethrust Ds on the fronts. Was wondering if I could run the smoothies without caps.thanks. I gotta say I like them both, nice work guys and thanks! Derek
When I talked to the wheel shop they said they can also send them with your bolt pattern instead of vari fit. I got the varifit because I run caps and change stuff so much.
Sorry for the crappy picture. I know going this route isn't the best looking, but it was about the cheapest, so I could get the show on the road, so to speak. Wheels are U.S. wheel 15x6 from Summit (about $55 each) Push thru caps from Wheels of Steel ($9 each) and bullet lug nuts from Stockton wheel (about $2 each). Not sure what to do about the extra holes, if anything. These may just be temporary wheels, till I blow the whole thing apart for final paint.
They are stock 15X5 chromed, my rears are 15X6 from wheel vintiques and look identical. It cost a few $ to chrome them, I think I paid around $600 for the pair. It is chepaer to buy them, my rear wheels were about $80 each.
Yeah Judd, if possible, a closer pic...........I'd say this may be the trick, smoothies from Summit, etc , caps and lugs..... and your setup with the mags in front, that's what's in my minds eye! Thanks Boys ! Derek PS - how does the chrome hold up to daily driving on these?
Wheel Vintiques chrome reverse from Summit Racing. You can custom order width, backspace, and single bolt circle.
With and with out the caps they came with. the center under the cap isn't chrome. No rust problems so far.
AWESOME JUDD! Thanks for the extree pics. I think I'm going this route ! Love the look ! Cheers, Derek
I guess that makes me a dork I always thought chrome rims without caps or spiders looked like a farm truck. Craig
Wow Hon that is a bitchin' truck, will it be at Paso? Oh yeah I have the same wheels on my roadster so I am a dork also.
In my opinion (that and 5 bucks will get you a coffee at Starbucks) the chrome reverse are more of a traditional hot rod wheel I saw growing up in the 60's. There was a time when you couldn't get them and the smoothy wheel came out in its place. I like the look of the un capped chrome reverse wheels. They give a more authentic 60's look to cars. American Graffitti cars had them and they were bitchin'. Its a small difference that most people don't notice. Kind of like the difference between the old Torque Thrust and the new ones. Most wouldn't notice, but I do, and that's what makes me an asshole..... Your hot rods with the smoothies do look good though. Don't hate me because I have an opinion.......
If you want to get real technical, then even OEM style Chrome reverse wheels are incorrect. If you want a true early sixties look you have to use an old rim because the new ones have a bell shaped back of the rim while old rims have a tapered shape. I think that American Gaffitti was supposed to be set in '62 or '63 and the wheels they used in the movie were an aftermarket wheel that was available in the 70s that had a bell shaped outer and bell shaped outers weren't made until about 66. Here's a tapered outer wheel. As for the price being so much to chrome stock wheel, its very hard to chrome a wheel that is already put together. Its much easier to chrome the two pieces separatly and then weld them together. Of course I don't really care to that technical about what other people are putting on their cars, but I'll be putting the tapered out type wheels on my car. Jimmy McLean
