I know the flat black question has been talked about alot, but I have a new question. I wasn't going to paint our 54 flat black this time around, but I just really like flat black, and while considering other colors, Miss Tina said with a wink that flat black is sexy. Well that sealed it for me! It will be flat black. Now I have shot a ton of Blitz, but am kinda leaning away from this option because of the pain later if I decide a few years from now I want color. I know blitz can be a pain to paint over. I have also heard horror stoies about Hot Rod Flatz. Not coming out right, to shiney, etc. So that brings up DP90. I have spoken to people running this stuff for as long as 5 years, and it still looks wonderfull. There was a cat with a 47 ish Chevy at Columbus with a texaco star on the door that looked as fresh as if it was a new job, and he told me it was 6 years old. He simply washes it and goes over it wih Meguirs spray wax. And when I'm ready I can sand prep and paint. So I thought the matter was solved and I would shoot DP90. Yesterday I went by my local dealer and spoke to them (while getting some filler). They said there is no more DP90. They have black primer and it looks just like 90, but it is now a lead free product with a new thinner. They said they couldn't say how long it's lasting power would be. So now me being the worry wort I am, I'm wondering if I should re-think, or just go for it and stop thinking this thing to death. Anybody use this new stuff? Sorry can't remember what they called it. Thanks
its DP-LF primer i think it has more shine to it than the old DP primers. also its crappy stuff to try to sand for topcoating. if it were me, id go with a flattened topcoat finish. also even the old DP primers turn chalky and are not good at protecting the steel from rust after a few years
All I know of is DP-90LF (as in "lead-free")... and from everything I can tell, it won't last nearly as long as the non-LF. Last time we shot this car, it was PPG's K93 primer mixed with their "Concept" line (single-stage) "Strong Black". Then we added some flattener to some clear and fogged that over it. I think it looked real good, and the surface felt a lot more like something that would hold up longer than DP or other primers do. This was shot in September 06, and lived outside all day in the Texas sun, and still looked as good when I sold it about a month ago as it did the same day it was shot. I wouldn't be able to say that for straight primer.
I used Sherwin Williams 2 part urethane primer. DP-90 seems to accumulate fingerprints. The S/W product never gave me a problem, and I never waxed it, wash and wear. The other good thing about it is that you can choose your level of black ( or any other color ) as it is a tintable primer. It was great shit and really easy to shoot!!!!
I would use standard enamel or even urethane single-stage black, with a lot of flattener. I've done this many times back in my body shop days. You can really fine-tune exactly how much gloss you want, spray test panels first to get it just how you want. This finish will hold up forever, no maintenance, and it's easily paintable if you want your car shiny someday.
I'm a cheap ass, I used Rustoleum Satin Black cut down with 15% mineral spirits. I need to finish the body work, so its easy to re-shoot as I get more done, and you can paint over it without a hassle. I even wiped the dust off most of it before I shot.
I used this on my 34 and loved how the flat came out. Mix it with Mineral Spirits as noted above. Previous posts on this stuff have provided long term results over many years. Check out the Brush on paint job post with this paint. http://jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=160907&highlight=paint
i used straight ppg dmc 1683 black basecoat with a little flatener and seems to be holding up great. not getting chalky
use a basecoat.. that is what i like doin and it seals the primer. just have to treat it like any other paint job so get rid of flaws. thats what i put on BadBobs merc. i like it and it dries in 10 minutes if you screw something up to fix
not sure if its the same stuff, but at ACE they sell XO rust. this shit works good. just when you spray it it gets everywhere so clean out the garage before spraying. shit my old cutlass in this and it turned out better than any primer ive seen. even cover 150 grit scratches. i reduced it 2:1 with acetone and it worked bitchen. this shit can also be tinted and more acetone you use, the flatter it gets. shot a 79 malibu 1:1 and it was flat!!!
I was at Sherwin Williams chemical coatings store in Fort Worth today and noticed they sell a totally flat black enamel. Also sell a semi gloss black enamel. I know it's not primer, but it should last a lot longer, and it is totally flat. Might be a pain to re-paint later.
