I know how big(wide) of a tire I can use on the back of ,
    my 55 chevy,
But I want to use Radir or cheater slicks on the back without changing the leafs inboard,
I have no experience with the above mentioned brand,
I think they are flat on the side walls!(pie cutters),as in they don't bulge out. Is that correct?
I can run a 8.5x 15 x 30 tall with a regular tire and I'm hoping to run a wider(9.0 or 9.5 or 10.0) slick in the radir or cheater stlye..............
Has anyone run this kind of set-up before !
Has anyone got any experience with what I'm trying to do?
Please help ,I only want to buy one set of back tires and I would like to do this as soon as possible, before the money is gone....
Thanks guys in advance and I hope someone can help me on this problem!
    Its worth a sixer,for the correct information! ! ! ! ! !
    YOU CHOOSE THE BRAND!

I run 10 inch Radir cheaters on 10 inch wide wheels and the sidewalls of the tire are in no way flat. They buldge. I have the measurement written down somewhere, I'll see if I can find it. I don't have any experience with the other sizes or brands, but some of the Hurst cheaters that I have seen seem to have less of a sidewall buldge. Hurst also has a variety of sizes that may work for you. Check with Cody at Hotrod Rubber for specifics.

Not sure if this helps but, my dad has a 57 chevy WITH a narrowed rear end, springs move inboard (CCI pocket kit), and wheel wells widened. He bought a set of whitewall slicks size 10.5x29.5 I think, either way they were WAY TO TALL to fit in the wheel wells.Width was not a problem though. However, his car is lowered a bit which I know would cause a clearance issue. This was quite a while ago, and what I remember was there was NO way those tires were fitting on there.

That sidewall bulge is called "section width". Speedway Motors shows it as cross section on thier web site. Picture a mounted tire laying on the floor, put a straight edge across the side wall and measure thru the center hole to the floor. You can find the section width in the manufactuers specs. It is measured on the recommended rim width. With the section number and the rim back space number, you can get a real good idea if its going to fit or not. Hope that helps

I don't know where they got it, but I've seen on the Powerblock's "Musclecar" show, they used this tool that mounted to the wheel studs and allowed them to exactly calculate what size tire they could use by simulating the rim size, as well as what potential offset to use in order to fit the most tire in place. I've also seen'em use it on Trucks as well.

Perhaps someone else knows what/where it is and where to get it?

If your '55 is mobile, take it to someplace like Western Auto and explain what you are wanting to do. They typically will mount a tire for you, install it on your '55, and then allow you to see if it is what you want or will need. If it doesn't fit, then they will try something else. Anyone who sells wheels and tires should be willing to do this in order to create a repeat customer as well as bring in new business.

call Radir...they have more of their frinds running more combinations on mid 50's chevs than most...they will know what works, with slicks and rim width and backspacing...forget your local tire shop unless they sell the combo...

Your 8.5 rim is perfect for our 30"x10"x15"
but I dont believe it will fit with your stock setup.
I may be wrong. Cross section of my tire on an 8.5 rim is 10.5".
Tread width is a true 10".
I dont think you will find many people runing a combination like you are describing without some modifications. You can't just bolt up a fatty tire combination without some mod's wether it be spring relocation, Radius wheel wells, correct backspacing on wheels so on so on.Most likely you will rub the forward leading edge of the wheel well lip on stock application with wide tire.
    Your Welcome:D

I have heard a 275/60/15 (28 in tall) will fit in a stock wheelwell.

Actually that's not quite accurate. Section width is the advertised width of the treaded area of the tire. The total width will always be wider than the section width and unfortunately it's not a measurement that is readily available because it changes depending on what width wheel you have the tire mounted on. You were spot-on at describing the correct way to measure the maximum outside width of the tire while it is mounted though.

  16. The local pub had a sign for years saying free beer tomorrow. I kept turning up and once again, free beer tomorrow. After three years of going there daily I gave up on the free beer.

I had L60-15 tires under my 55 with the stock suspension and they fit. It was tight and I had to do some fennegling to get them in there. I can put a tape measure on them if you want to find out the tread width.

Thanks to everyone that has tried to help me with my question,
I love the FU%KING NEW GUYS (oldtruck)answers and how they try to fit in with their lack of knowledge about the smallest things ! ! ! !
    Thanks
(oldtruck) I Do OWN and use a tape measure,
And sometimes I use my brain to judge how to answer some folks question and to be helpful ,LIKE the HAMB was originally set-up for .
    Soooooooooooo

  22. Remember That A Bigger Tire And Wheel Will Fit Only If You Can Get Them Bolted On..
Soooo Use A Bumperjack/hilift Jack Do One Side At A Time

As The One Side Is Lifted The Axle Kinda Drops In The Opening... If Need Be Have The Other Side Wheel/tire Raised Up On Planks Or Blocks .. Lift This Thing Way Up....
The Problem Comes If You Have A Flat All Equip Is Needed To Undo The Deed

Having Car Onhoist/ Lift Will Balance The Axle Drop In The Wheel Well And Tire Is Snake Over Drum.. Less Room Than Jacking

Hint- Lowered Cars Have Even Less Room Here

At Ride Height Use A Yardstick Laying The Edge On The Drum Measure From The Edge On The Drum To Inside And Outside ..if You Use A Foot Long Ruler As A Locator At A Right Angle To The Yardstick Place At Inch Marks On Yard Stick.( May Take 3-4hands To Do This)... Check All Areas That Seem Close Call Out Measure Ments To Helper And Viola After Doing Both Sides You Will Have Max.tire Section Width And Backspacing

Deduct A Little For Body Roll ... Rubbing On Flat Not So Bad Rubbing On Sharps Way Bad

Go Ahead Drink The Beer The Money Saved On Your Own Prep Will Be More Than Enuf At Happy Hour.
