I want to repair the steering wheel horn assembly of my '59 Edsel. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience repairing these types of horns. I don't want to mess up and have a crappy looking steering wheel. So I'm asking for instructions on how to remove the horn and have a functioning horn like in the old days. Thanks in advance, TD
If your Edsel has the push buttons in the wheel, you better get a shop manual. I'm guessing that could be an expensive screw up without the manual.
My Edsel is a 59. It has a column shifter. only the horn assembly is on the center of the steering wheel.
I've got a '59 Edsel too, but my horn is also broken. I think its the same wheel as a FORD, so the plastic is prob repoped.
the horn is under the hood, the horn button is on the steering wheel..... but in general, you have to take the button off, and then find the part of it that is the actual switch, and also the part that is the contact that electrically connects the switch to the stationary wire in the steering column. Then look things over, maybe use an ohm meter to see if the parts are working properly, and figure out what's wrong. Be patient, be inquisitive, and be careful not to break stuff. this page from the 1958 ford manual might help a little bit. http://www.tocmp.com/manuals/Ford/1958/Service/09/Group9/images/09-010.JPG
I have a 59 Corsair and the plastic is broken on it, too as well as and the replacement horn ring I bought. I guess these just came out of the factory broken. I haven't gotten to repairing it yet, I'm more concerned about the leaky power steering.
