I read the article in here where a guy was trying to remove his axle shaft out of a 60 chevy diff. I have no slide hammer but what I do is install the brake drum upside down on the axle studs, scre on the lugnuts upside down a bout 5 threads. Then use the brake drum as your slide hammer,It has work a zillion times for me......:D

Good idea...if it's not stuck too badly.

I have an old axle flange that I drilled the stud holes out big enough that it easily goes on. Then welded a strong steel hook onto it for a hevy dent puller to hook on. It works well.

I made one years ago, used a 55 chev.axle,2, 265 front pulleys for the slide hammer and welded on a spider gear to keep it all together.Knocked out the studs and hacksawed off hub locating protrusion.Still have it,works like a shot.
Sure beat the LOG chain set up in the garage where I worked!

  4. 10+ft of log chain. Wrap it around the flange step back and leave about a foot or two of slack in it and whip it. Usually a couple of good strong whips will pop the most stubborn axle loose.

Gonna try the brake drum thing I got several old drums layin' around and don't always have room for the chain.
