Way back when the previous owner removed the road draft tube on my 283 and left a big hole in the rear of the block. Will I have any problems if I install Moon style breathers in the valve covers, plug the old road draft tube hole and put a vented cap on the oil fill tube? Will that be sufficient to vent the engine/avoid blowing gaskets out of the thing and keep the oil from spewing out of the breathers/oil fill tube?
Should work, it would be nice if the breathers were well baffled, to keep oil from being blown out of them. Another thing you could do is get the PCV hose fitting that goes in that hole in the back of the block on 1962-1968 engines, and put a pcv valve between it and the carb, leave the valve covers alone, and run the vented cap on the oil fill tube.
The breathers come with a foam insert but I could make a baffle for them if I need to. I think that just drilling a few holes in the valve cover instead of cutting one big one would also act as a baffle wouldnt it?
I'm with Squirrel if you have to plug the back of the block anyway put a pcv between it and the carb and you will have even less blowing out the breathers. Keeps the green people happy too. Fred
The key to proper location of breathers in the valve covers is to stay away from the push rods. If the hole is located above a pushrod, oil will be splashed up into the breather base and become a mess on the valve covers. If you have a pcv type hose in a simular location, then the oil is ****ed into the combustion chamber. The draft tube was located under the car in such a manner as to create a suction and draw out unwanted vapors. You should plug this hole to keep out dirt and etc. The set up you want to run will work, but having a suction hose to the base of the carb would be better.
