This will surely drop me down a few pegs on the "respect-o-meter".

Does anyone wear a helmet in their roadster? I will probably not have a windshield, or a very small one. I've seen the "hot rod" helmets, but do people actually wear these? I'm not so concerned about it for roll-over protection as much as flying debris. I had a branch fall off of a tree one time and hit the windshield of my daily driver. All I could think of was if that had happened in my roadster I might have been knocked out. I know you can never be totally safe on the road, but is wearing a helmet worthwhile?

I will not taking any hazing personally on this one. I knew when I asked some of the responses would not be pretty.

when I bought my (drag racing) helmet last fall, I drove home in my 55 with it on...it was fun!

My guess is the helmet would be more helpful when you plough into someone, than to protect you from debris.

Nope, but I have thought about what truck rubber would do to me in my convert should it ever come off a truck tire and hit me. But I decided long ago not going to dwell on what may/could happen.

As long as you can pull off this look, you should be fine.

    What exactly does this...

"I will not taking any hazing personally on this one."

    ...mean?

I found an original WWII german helmet to wear. It's a little heavy, but not bad. My friend's flamed helmet is a fibeglass copy thats alot lighter.

Look at it as part of your roadster riding costume rather than a safety feature. Kinda like the bikers and their leather chaps...

I assure you that pants are not needed to operate a vehicle safely.(ok maybe not safely)

  13. I don't wear a helmet in my roadster---think it looks goofy as Hell. But------Ever since I added the convertible top, it snaps and flaps so damn loudly at anything over 40 MPH that I am considering either earplugs or headphones.

if you go faster....you'll be under the limb before it hits you! :D
i dont think a helmet would be as out of place if you put numbers on your car and made it look like a race car
maybe an old leather wrapped cromwell?
or one like tommy pictured...they're really cheap at surplus stores and pretty sturdy...but the chin straps would have to be made a bit better to stay on your head
what about just a pith helmet?

theres lots of options to not look too out of place
I'm still a fan of the goggles and a grin though!

    good luck
    Zach

There's a guy here in town that drives a roadster year round (snow!) - he wears a helmet in the winter mainly for warmth.

Yes, I meant just a little what I call skull cap looking thing. Sort of like the army helmet. Nothing fancy maybe just flat black to go with some goggles. I think the leather helmet would make my head sweat too much, but it would look awesome.

My roadster also has a roll bar.

  17. I am not making this up:

When I had my low T roadster, my wife used to beg me to wear a helmet, which I thought would make me look like a total candy-ass dork (especially in IL, where helmets are optional for motorcycles). Anyway, I relented and agreed that I would wear a helmet on the long drive to the Pileup one year. On the way a truck in front of me kicked up a rock and hit me dead center where my forehead was.

If not for that helmet I would be either dead, or drooling the rest of my life away in a home.

Something else to think about in a roadster is protection from the sun. I live in a farming community where lots of folks are out in the sun all day long and have seen a few people walking around with the tops of their ears gone from sunburn and skin cancer.
I have a couple of bikes and usually were something that covers my ears when I go on a long ride.

I'd certainly wear something to protect my eyes but my wife would likely have me get a few stitches as opposed to wearing a helmet.

She says she gets embaressed when I wear my old goggles and half helmet around on my bike.

Yes, thank you for pointing out that I'm a moron, and for giving me the definition. You're advise has been most helpful of all. Thanks again

  26. That's funny.
Sorry for the poor bastard that has to wear that at work.

  27. Ever see the cartoon guy called Highboy Hank in the Good Guys magazine? If you think Hank's cool go for it, man.

And get a helmet for the TimeOut Doll too.

And I can't find a pic, but the helmets the kids on the Short Bus wear are neato also.

Or any helmet from the bad ass biker gang, The Black Widows, from the Clint Eastwood "Any which way…" movies would work ofr ya.

    Wear the dam helmet!

It was a hot day and I was about to take off on my bike, wife comes out raising hell about not wearing my helmet, she won the argument as always. Five miles down the road some asshole swicthes lanes, my front wheel is at his rear bumper, on coming traffic, going 50 mph, I said this is not going to be good just before I went head first through his rear window. The helmet saved my ass. Oh and after 50+ years of tearing around in my hot rods and bikes without ear protection I wrecked my hearing. At least I can't hear them when they make fun of me when I wear my helmet.

PS I use to beleave this shit couldn't happen to me!

  29. here is what i wear it keeps the sun off. long trips i use a leather pilots cap or a welding cap and saftey glasses.

  30. I don't think your helmet is a German helmet... it looks more like a Spanish helmet with that little clip think on the front.

A Spanish M42... it should have 7 rivits for the liner... as apposed to 3 rivits for a German M42...

    Sam.
