they just bolt right on if you drill the kingpin hole out to 55/64ths on your model a axle.use a 7/8ths flex hone to finish the press fit. i used a drill press, but i bet it could be done with a hand drill if you used a 27/32nds bit first.this setup uses the kingpins from the 56 truck.mine is mounted suicide,so i dont know about arm clearance.i also havent gotten a steering arm on it yet,but i think the bolt spacing on the backing plates are the same.anyone else do this?the spindles and brakes from these trucks are alot easier to find than the 48' backing plates and spindles everyone else uses.i used a 56' f100 but youd have to check on what other years work.it would prob be 56 and back, cuz i know in 57 they switched up alot of things like bolt patern on wheels ect.
do you have any pics of what youve done? do you means youve fitted 53-57 f100 spindles to an A axle by reaming the kingpin bigger? if so id like to see pics of that setup as i have all the part to do similar. f1 are already the right size.
yup, thats what ive done.i even used the hubs and they have that neet 5x5.5 bolt patter for the cool wire wheels.
cool, what did you do with the big funky shaped steering arm, leave it on or cut it off and run something else? you got pics of it all up and together?
You are saying " '56 F1". Is it '56, or F1? I was under the impression that the F100, ('53-56) had a different kingpin inclination angle. and the camber would be way off. The F1 (48-52) is the same king pin angle as the '28-48 p***enger car. I've run those on the early axles.
I have done this as well. I am not on the road yet. I reamed the axle out to fit the larger kingpin. Everything lined up great once the kingpin hole was enlarged. I will probably make some steering arms since the ones that came on the truck axle are very short and odd looking. I will see if i can get some pictures on here.
Here are the pics, it is fairly self explanatory. This is the axle I got the spindles off of. This took about 3 hours to do both sides. The reamer takes out very little metal on each p***. I ended up with a very tight fit. Today I got the correct drill bit so i will be redrilling the hubs to a 4 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern.
I have all of the parts to do this also but they are spares. I just bought a set of 37 ford spindles to use my 53 backing plates on.
The axle is a 47 so I could have just got the right bearings and used the backing plates and drums on this axle. the reason I did it this way is because the kingpin hole was egg shaped and the spindle had excesive play. When I reamed the axle to fit the truck kingpins it took out the wear and I got good clean metal in about 90% of the hole.
