Ive got a 1963 Thunderbird, which has no seat belt of any form. Do i need to install some or are they not required according to law? I cant find anything except for this link to the DMV which says nothing about older vehicles. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27315.htm
I've been told that if it didnt come with em you dont need em... unless, you ever plan on carrying a p***enger under 16.
you don't need them by law IF it didn't come with them from the factory (not just taken out by a previous owner). the book says no dealer shall sell a car without belts '68 and newer.
Don't need them unless the officer that stops you is a jerk. Then you'll need a judge that know you don't need them. but everyone's right you don't need em
They were still an OPTION in 63, therefore not required but I would install them for safety to myself and loved ones.
Ive been called on it before. We were getting a ticket for something else and the cop asked us why we werent wearing seat belts. I told him we dont have any. He gave me a screwy look, and that was that. Youll be fine without them....
Hey, Bluto nailed it, but if ya get a cop who's moma hated him you're ****ed! And if yer carryin' trophies under 16 yrs. of age, you're doubley ****ed! You may wind up teachin' the vehicle code, in court, that is unless, ofcourse, the judge is havin' a bad day, and than it could get expensive. Besides, seatbelts are overrated, this is one way nature thins the herd. S****ey Devils C.C.
I keep a copy of that page of the vehicle code book in my glove box in case I come across one of those ***hole cops. It says, After Jan. 1 1962 all vehicles must has seatbelts in the front 2 seating positions. After Jan. 1 1968 all vehicles must have seatbelts for all seating positions
A little twist to keep in mind....I believe it is the law that you have to wear your seat belt if you have one, even if your car didn't come with one from the factory. I guy I know got a ticket in his 1955 truck this way! Mike
Yeah , I talked to a CHP once and he did say that If they had them in the car you got to wear them. IF THE CAR doesn't have them, they can't make you put them in, unless you transporting kids and such. -Alexis =)
Has anyone fought this and won? I was under the impression that you could only not have them if your vehicle was registered as a historic vehicle and it did not have them originaly, and then you were limited to parades and such. I have 5 point harnesses but I was always curious about this.
