This is for sale on e-bay and it's fairly near Austin where I live. Can anyone confirm this is a 392 based on what is in the listing?

How risky is it (with this particular type of motor) to buy without pulling the heads first to check for cracking?

What other pitfalls/considerations should I be aware of?

    Help!!!!!

    Thanks in advance!:D

I was watching that one too, pretty sure I won't win it now :D

I'd say the risk of buying it without checking first is that the block is cracked, there's a valve stuck sideways in one or several of the cylinders, etc.

Consider it at least must be rebuilt minimum.

I would go look at it or ask some more questions. I don't see any thing bolted on. It might not have any pistons, rockers, valves or anything but a crank. It is probably not cracked but I am also suspecious that it is a 354. I don't have the chart now but that sounds like a 56 part number. Since the pan and covers are loose,I would want pics. Good luck

If they won't let you take the heads off, run away, or pay 2 cents a pound.

    From experiance...

Looks right to me to be a 392 with 392 heads - condition is a ****shoot - how much can you gamble that it's all usable?

Agree, The bid is just over 1900$ that's about normal for a 392 that needs a rebuild.

I knew the fella who's motor that was. He was definitely a HEMI nut - and good guy. His wife admittedly does NOT know much about his stuff - if you're serious you should go inspect it in person. Terry was "good people" - I expect his wife is the same.

Personally I don't recognize the number - and if there was a straigh on front shot we could determine it it was a 354 or 392 by the height of the intake runners. Maybe ask if she can send another pic.

The verticle "ribs" cast into the end of the heads say 392 to me - 354s didn't have them in my experience.

Looks to be 392 head castings with the water outlets on both ends. Can't see for sure, but the space between the rocker cover surface and the top of this water outlet appears to confirm 392. You should be able to place your complete thumb atop that outlet and still be at or just below the cover rail. This same outlet sits higher on a 331/354 head and your thumb would sit higher than the rail surface.
