I'm still in the process of connecting up the steering linkage on my straight axle conversion in a 64 Fairlane. I am using an axle from a 65 Econoline. 2 options were to use the original econo arms and build a top bracket for the RH spindle for the drag link, or machine 2 new steering arms. Then I noticed this steering arm from a picture of a local guys 64 fairlane with a straight axle. I tried to get in touch with owner with no luck. I can tell from the picture, it is definately a Ford axle(same axle I have) either from a truck or Econoline van. Same for the spindle. The right hand arm has provisions for the RH tie rod, then the arm continues and bends upwards for the drag link to connect to. The steering arms for the econoline I have are completely different. Does anyone recognize this arm? and know what application it is from? Can't tell from the picture, but I'm guessing it's oem Ford? or maybe a modified arm? Any info would be great! See pictures below. Sorry they are not the greatest pics. Thanks,
Don't know...but whatever you do to hook your drag link up, make sure its as parallel as possible to the road. The more down angle it has, the more bump steer it has. You could tame that a little with a panhard bar on the same angle as the drag link, BUT a parallel leaf setup like that won't like a panhard on a steep angle either. It will bind up the suspension real bad. Do a search thru "Tingler"s posts and you'll find out how he did it with a homebuilt top steering arm. Says it works great!
axle under the car is from 65 Ford (C5TA part #) or later. 48-52 spindles are also different. Steering arm I am looking for bolts through the spindle, rear to front, not to the backing plate bolts.
65 was the first year of the Twin-I-Beam suspension on Ford pickups. Perhaps E-vans did not change until the new body in 1968.
