Lets see some pictures of lettering on cars, Speedshop Logos, Numbers etc... I need some ideas for my Falcon A/FX. Todd
Here is a link to a picture of the hokey lettering on my '63 Impala Z-11 look alike. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=165032&d=1140632016
Lettering from the old days is really a hodge podge of style and lettering ability. Few racers had the money to pay a professional signwriter and usually the local striper did the lettering. Stripers weren't always the best letterers. The sample door that was shown in a previous post was probably done by a modern day letterer in that the letter styles are incorrect. The main alphabet is a roman alphabet and the J,S, are incorrect, and the H,should have two fat strokes, and W, is backwards. Having said all that, the signwork takes a character because of the imperfections and really does represent the style of the era. The lettering is a little cruder than modern computer cut vinyl and that is the beauty of it.
"Aint nothin' like a hand job" Famous quote of a local striper and lettering guy. I love old style hand lettering and actually do my own lettering on my race cars with One-Shot enamel. I'm no expert, but I enjoy doing it and I think it gives me a little more pride in the work that has gone into the car. Here's one I lettered:
Here's a shot of the lettering I uncovered on my '55 ex-g***er project - there is more under the primer but basically all stencilled-on from the look of it!
We redid 1149 in February this year. The painted sign numbers should pop much better on the salt. We would have liked to have had time to re-do all of 1149 in paint, but settled on the cl*** and number. The sponsors will stay in vinyl. Mike
I've got a couple books I bought from Eastwood on the subject of hand lettering. They're pretty decent, but does anyone have others they recommend?
