AGH! The boss wants me to go to a sales seminar in FL Jalopy Showdown weekend.....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hotrodladycrusr, Mar 21, 2007.

  1. Religious Holiday?

Treat it like a sales call. Set up a short meeting and be straight. Use your best 'what you're saying is...'; 'and this is where I am coming from' customer service training exercise. Use the info you have learned from previous sales conferences, to get out of this one. Sell, sell, sell...

How about telling your boss you planned this as a "SALES" week-end and plan to make big sales at the show???
This would work unless you sale..... say! New BMW's or the like.

This paragraph from your last reply really answers your question and should really be the end to it.

The whole countries sales force is going to be attending but you want to be excused so you can go and play???? I think you really need to look at your priorities.

As for being exhausted on Monday the rest of the countries sales team will be in the same position so what makes you special? Personally I suspect you would be at least if not more tired after a weekend playing.

I have run both national and international sales teams and have always said that all petty criminals should be sentenced to managing a sales team for 12 months. After putting up with all the egos and dramas they would never reoffend.

Finally this isn't a issue that should be being aired on a public forum. It is a case of your commitment and loyalty to your employer and should be between you and your boss ONLY!!

As I said before get over it and get on with doing your job. There will be plenty of other events in the future.

How about I get you a doctor's excuse. Tell him the trip down south is purely for medicinal purposes. It's a mental health trip.

My grandfather, a life-long salesman would say "Funny people in this world!" How can someone presume to know your priorities and the aspects of the situation. We often ask and receive good counsel here.
    Denise,
If you take the long view on this, ten years from now, your boss will appreciate the one(?) time you sacrificed fun, for supporting the team. (you had mentioned that all sales work was strictly Monday thru Friday.)

    Denise,
I have the perfect solution. Have Scary Larry change the show date! That way you can go to work and still make the show. I just can't believe no one thought of that before.

As I see the problem, you showed an interest in the seminar before the date was set and your boss probably already made the commitment for accomidations for you. Now that the date has been set, it conflicts with something you wanted to do instead. Apparently having to be at the seminar over a weekend wasn't a problem until it conflicted with something you had planned.

Sorry, suck it up and do the seminar. Next time, know the dates before you show an interest. It has nothing to do with the job or play time and everything to do with honoring your commitments, least thats how I see it. Gene

  14. Denise, I feel your pain. The primer Nationals is coming, one of my favorite weekends of the year and it's only a mile or two from my house. This year I'm gonna miss it because I will be setting my daughter up in college in San Deigo. I will be in a major funk that weekend. Hope you can figure something out.

  15. Life is full of compramise, singling yourself out, when all the other sales reps will be there, can't be a good thing.Yes everyone will miss you at the showdown, but the employer's request is probably the right choice.Even though you are a top seller, maybe he hopes your skills will influence some of the others on the TEAM which would be impossible if you are absent.Having seen the amount of "team' support you show the HAMB ,I'd venture to say that your employer see's this in your job also.Wanting you there may be a show of respect of your value to him.Not respecting his wishes, would show him great disrespect,if this is the case.Hope it all works out.

Denise...if it makes you feel better the next time I see you I'll throew a bunch of mud at you...:)

Rod...you sound like the typical boss/warden. Your employees must feel like criminals that have been sentenced to work for you.

If you have only had to go to this one function in four years concider yourself lucky.
I'm self employed and sometimes going on weekends is not an option.
My wife is on call about every fourth weekend with no options to get out of town.
And most other people that have jobs around here worth having seem to put in weekend time too.
So I would concider yourself lucky to have the job you have and go cherfully to Florida.

  20. 1) Video Conference yourself into the seminar
    2) Go to Florida, but drive the Olds and charge mileage instead of airfare
(This is how I went to Dixi Fried).
    3) Hire a look alike to attend the seminar and go the Showdown anyway.
    4) Find a mud pit in Florida and pretend you're in York Springs and mud bog the Rental.
    5) Get a digi cam with a live link and Larry can attach it to all the cars doing hot laps, then you can feel like you are there when you are actually sitting in the seminar. Ooooo, a Helmet cam and I nominate Junior to wear it.

I'll think a little more on this.
On a side note, I can't remember the last swap meet or weekday event I got
to attend because I am travelling so much, 32 days on the road just this
year. I look at the big picture and have made a choice to sacrafice some car
events to better my career and meet long term goals. It's all about making
choices that are right for you.

Wouldn't sending someone with lower numbers in sales to a seminar on sales make more sense?
The seminar would be more beneficial to someone needing to improve their productivity.
If that doesn't convince him, put a little onion juice on a hankie and rub it under your eyes and go ask him again with teary eyes.
If he doesn't fall for it he's heartless:D

I learned long ago that there are 3 types of people who attend seminars:
    1. Prisoners (not productive)
    2. Vacationers (having a good time)
    3. Learners (serious)

You'd be going as a Prisoner. What will you remember by the time you get home? Your mind will be in Texas.

If your job is important to you, and this isn''t a regular thing for him to ask, I'd bite the bullet & hit the seminar.

And being the top performer, in my eyes (having managed sales teams) it is even MORE important for you to be there to show the other people under you that everyone in the department is equal.

The dude earlier mentioning the high number of unemployed people in Michigan has a really good point. If your boss has given you a lot of time off for carshows in the past, and he's not a car guy himself, the whole "this show is special" deal isn't going to mean anything to him. When you say that, what he will HEAR is "I really don't take my job nearly as seriously I do my hobby, and no, I cannot be bothered to skip even one carshow for you."

If I were your boss, right now I'd be thinking "maybe she should get a job at the car show".

In this current age of having to carry a blackberry around, so that you essentially are always at work, managers could care less about us, our spare time, or our weekends off.

I think the really interesting thing to come out of this thread is that it certainly didn't go the way Denise expected and that in fact the majority have a responsible attitude towards work and play and have their prioritys right.

If more people thought like you guys maybe there wouldn't be so many jobs being exported off shore. In order to compete in the global economy we are all having to become more flexible and the I've done my 40 hours and am out of here just won't wash anymore.

Well done guys certainly a interesting result.
