I am in the process of adapting some F-1 brakes to my 37 spindles. I wanted to run 5x4.5 wheels, as I already had a rear axle with that bolt pattern. So I just redrilled my front hubs and installed new wheel studs. I have everything pretty much squared away except I am having trouble finding a drum to work. I can get them at all my local parts stores, but the ones I ordered have the 5x5.5 bolt circle and then some smaller holes on the inside of that pattern. These holes are not allowing me to redrill the drums for my bolt pattern because I would catch them when I drill my 5x4.5. I was able to get ONE drum from a store that only has the 5x5.5 pattern, but when I went back to get a second, they only could get the one with the smaller circles. I was curious if there is any other year/model car that I may be able to try?? I would be set if they can get another one with just the 5x5.5 holes which would allow me to simply redrill them....but they are now saying thier vendor is out of stock. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you saying you're ordering F1 drums new and they have a dual bolt pattern punched in them? Joblot Automotive in L.I. NY, **** Spadaro in Altamont NY, Little Dearborn Parts in Minneapolis MN, Joe Smith Automotive in the Atlanta area, and many others should be able to fix you up with what you need.

Well the small pattern on the inside of the 5x5.5 pattern doesnt really look like a bolt pattern, just holes. I am not really sure what they are for. The size of the holes is even smaller....???

  4. no need to redrill the 4-1/2" BC holes on the new drum....just take a rat tail file and slot the existing 5-1/2" holes a half inch towards the center. i've done it several times

i usually drill the hub and the drum at the same time with a jig

36-3Window, Does this center ok? I am using Chrysler wheels, so I turned down the center hub snout for my center hole in the rim to clear. So as for centering off that, its somewhat loose. Thanks

  6. the drum centers on a machined lip on the hub....you didn't get into that when you cut it down?

These are the same as what my drums look like. See the smaller holes within the 5x5. pattern.

Regardless of the bolt pattern you drill - The stud holes do not center the drum. The drum needs to center on the hub - the hub is machined the correct diameter to center the drum, this is called the register.

As 36-3w said, did you turn down your hubs all the way to the wheel mounting surface? Or leave enough of the register on the hub to locate the drum properly?

The drum still centers off the hub fine. I just had to turn the outside down in order for my wheel center hole to clear. Wouldnt the braking be bad if it didnt center off the "register" ? As in the drum wouldnt rotate properly when braking force is applied??

I found those at NAPA yesterday, but thats my problem I want one with just the 5x5.5 pattern, so I can drill (not slot) to a 5x4.5 pattern. Those smaller holes wont allow me to do that.

Stupid question here, Is this a front drum or rear? I can only find a listing for a rear drum. Will the front and rear drum interchange? Do you by chance have a part number?

I never thought about the slotting of the bolt circle, but it seems like it would work just fine, I will try this when I find me a new set.

The early bronco's had 4 wheel drums, but had two different rear sizes. They had a 10 inch or an 11 inch.

I have re-drilled them before to a 4.5 pattern. I just moved over a little and found a good place with some metal. The problem you MAY HAVE ... is that once you get the pattern on the F-1 or F-100 hubs ... is that most of 5 on 4.5 wheels will not fit. The center of the rim is smaller than the center of 5 on 5.5 rims. Aftermarket rims and Dodge rims with the 5 on 4.5 pattern have a larger center hole than the Fords.

  18. i have used f-100 or f-1 brakes on at least 6-7 cars , and redrilled them each time for 4-1/2 or 4-3/4" BC....as duece roadster said , find a place to drill them

I don't understand your problem. Just move your new hole over and down to clear the existing holes. I will go take a picture of the pair I just did.

Here are the pics, I used a wheel bolt circle guide to drill the hubs and drums at the same time.
