I read the tech article a long time ago about putting a 66 Mustang 6 cylinder radiator in a model A. I liked the idea but I wanted to know who's running one and what the dimensions are. I stopped by my local rad. shop after class to measure one but they didn't have any in stock. I just want to see how tall it's going to be with my chanelled car and chopped grille shell. If anybody has those numbers, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Scott.
do not have dimensions right off my head,,,,google 66 mustang radiator .......... theres a difference in the hose location on a six banger and a v8 ....... hope this helps
I just picked one up from Sacramento Mustang. I got the 6 cylinder 3 core because the inlets/outlets are set up to work with my early Rocket engine. Water pump goes to lower drivers side. The 8 cylinder goes to lower passenger side. The dimensions I have are 21H,17 3/4W,2 3/8D. I would verify these when you order (my measuring sucks). Hope this helps.
Hey Rev, You should be able to check with a good parts store to get what you need. Most have a catalog with pictures and dimensions of the radiators they stock - or have access to. I worked with O'reilly's here in Tulsa awhile back when I was looking for a specific radiator. They even pulled out a catalog to a specialty radiator manufacturer for more options. Just tell them what you are going to be putting into, and it'd be best to catch them when they are a bit slower - their rate of business, not the rate of their employees intelligence.
Friend of mine has one fit perfectly behind a 32 shell. 66Mustang V8 I think. I'll ask him this wknd.
I bought mine on E-bay....$100 brand new....3 row for a V-8....fits well behind my '31 shell. There are a few radiator places online (and E-bay) that will list the dimensions.....
Thanks everyone, I thought it was a 6 cyl but I guess everybody is using the V8 radiator. Thank you ne'erdowell that's exactly what I needed. I want to make a cardboard template to see how high my grille shell is going to have to set.
I'm using one too, and I've had it behind a '30, '31, and '32 shell. The '32 was the tightest fit, cut a bit off the radiator mounting flanges and it was good.
The generation One Stang Rad works well. I have used a few over the years in chopped A or deuce shells. My 29 roadster tub has one with added inlets and outlets for the early flathead engine. Some think it isn't cool enough but it works well for me. 60's parts aren't period perfect in wannabe minds but I don't give a rat's ass.
I never thought of that. Is one preferred over the other? Automatic versus manual? I was planning on getting a manual tranny one and just running a tranny cooler with my turbo 350.
Hey, Lucky. I don't know what the radiator in my A came out of, but it fits neatly under the '32 shell. You're welcome to come out and take measurements of the radiator or even borrow it for mock-up. Let me know!
Ijust bought an aluminum radiator for a 32 from prc with no brackets for $317 for small chevy 2" chop and will handle 600hp.
I bought a 3 row 65-66 v8 mustang radiator for my T project. It fits perfectly in my chopped 32 shell. I paid $100 for it new.
Early mustang v8 3 core biggest problem for me was the lower radiator hose.I "cheated" a bit but it works
heres a post of mine from awhile back. in it i give the dimensions and there are a few pics. hope this helps you out. also, mine is for a v8 with built in trans cooler for around $100 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=159932 scott, i know what you mean about the lower hose. i went to the parts store, grabbed a hose with the right looking bends and chopped it to fit.
Well thanks for the great info fellas (as usual) I checked Auto Zone and they have them for $132.99, not too bad when compared to a new Walker or Griffin. Does everyone running an SBC just have the upper inlet relocated to the upper left and patch the old opening on the right hand side, or is there some other trick? None of the pics had any upper radiator hose shots.
ok... I have one in front of my 48 flatty & the real deal truth is, you either have to shorten the 28-29 shell a bit to make it look good, or you have to make some sort of "grill" to make it look like you didnt make it work... not to mention that I have yet to see someone post a way to mount it that didnt look like a cheap fix... I will give it points that it's cheap ( i paid $99 to my door for one) and will work well, but as soon as I get an extra $500 to put one in that fits good and actually looks right in it I will keep holding the "it's great" torch like so many others...
Cool, my grille runs between the framerails, not sitting on top. If I put a stock 30 grille shell between the rails with the bottom resting on the floor the top of the shell is just slightly lower than the top of the firewall. So I'm going to have to hack off most of the bottom of the grille, I'll just have to get a radiator and see how low between the rails I can mount this thing, I can't have it taller than the cowl. I would like to see how you guys run fans and hoses though. I really don't want to run an electric fan. Thanks again.
I had one behind a '34 International p/u grill that had been shortened and it fit nicely...but it wasn't nearly enough rad for a 400 Pontiac.
