Hey I just became the new owner of a 1946 Willy's Jeep CJ. I bought it for $500.00 but the cool thing about it, it is a one owner Jeep. It has never been registered for on road use. The previous owner used it only for a tractor. Thats right a tractor. It has a power take off plow on the front. A tiller on the back along with a hoist alowing the rear to be rased off the ground and used the rear wheel as a belt driven chainsaw. The flat four engine still turns over and will run with just a little bit of cleaning up. Its been sitting in a feild for about a year so the rockers are a little bit rusty but parts for these Jeeps are fairly easy to come by. Any one who might have any good information on these Jeeps or web sites or clubs that might be helpfull to restore it would be greatly appreciated.
Seems to me Hemming Cl***ic Car or Vintage truck had an article 6-8 mos back on the early jeeps. There was mention of the immediate post war strategy by Jeep to market it for agricultural use. Plows, a three point hitch and attachments were available. Obviously, that didn't work out well- (go try it- you'll see even a small 8N ford will out plow the jeep)These things are pretty rare though I have seen only one other; I think it had a trencher attachment on it. I will try to find that issue and get back to ya. Great find though- Is there a dash plate with an "A" (I can't remember but I think the factory agriculture model might end with A i.e cj2-A)
I don't think there is an "A" on the plate but I will check to make sure. the other thing with this Jeep is that it is the three on the tree shift, oh and it has 52 thousand original miles and still has all of the hydraulics for the power take off.
Here are my favorite links for Willys Jeeps. Sounds like you have a CJ2A with rare farm acc. and column shift. I have 2 1952 CJ 3A's. Brian http://www.thecj2apage.com/ http://www.g503.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=19 http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Default.html http://www.cj-3a.com/
My uncle has a 48 he uses as a daily. Sounds to me like you made a buy that doesn't come around very often.
I have 1951 CJ3A. It is alot of fun. Check out this site as well: http://www.willystech.com/parts/board.shtml Tony
These guys will hook you up. Get their vintage catalog and have at it."Woody" there has a lot of knowledge of the older stuff. http://www.4wd.com/
Thanks for all of the info please keep it coming. This will be my second Jeep but this by far has to be the coolest.
I've always liked those old flatfenders. I have a '48 CJ3 that I want to restore one day. A neighbor gave it to me. It has the rear PTO, but it will be a big project.
I wouldn't have thought you could out on that many miles just driving around a farm. Remember when they used to advertise in the back of Popular Mechanics "Army Jeeps! $44."
Check out my uncle's company... www.vintagejeepparts.com These two are my little bro's '55 he fully rebuilt everything but the bodywork... Here's my Dad's recent project coming together... These next four pics are my cousin raising hell in his... And a recent one built by my uncle and cousin from Vintage Jeep Parts...
