i just purchased a weiand 2x4 intake. it's made for either edelbrock or carter afb carbs. my first plan was to pick up a pair of edelbrock 500 cfm carbs and play around with straight or progressive linkage.
a friend got me thinking the shiney, too new finish on the edelbrocks might not look right on the 354 i'm putting in my model A.
so what about afb's? what small cfm did they come? 390, 400, 450?
easy to tune? rebuild? kits available? anyone have any pics?

AFBs are easy to modify---just pick up one of the Strip Kits that Carter made for them. For some reason (maybe because there's so many of them), Pontiac AFBs seem to be the cheapest to pick up. Don't take one that's seized and think you're going to free it up, though; it's been my experience that once those aluminum carbs are stuck, they're STUCK! Most of the factory AFBs of the '60s were in the 500-550cfm range. The 400hp 409 carb was considered "big" at 600cfm.

The 400 cfm ones are the 9400-series. Watch out though, the Buick/Olds 215 guys diggum so they're $$$ and hard to find.

We have a old carb guy here in Indy that has a lot of older rebuilt stuff laying around.
He just sold me a pair of matched 500 cfm afbs for $150 each. They are the early Chrysler carbs and run really good . They are nice looking and have been rebuilt.
Let me know and i can check with him or just get you his number????

Just an FYI. I didn't care for the shiney finish on the Edelbrock's either, so I used the Edelbrock marine carb and removed the Edelbrock tag thats riveted to the front of the carb. You can sort of see it in the below pic.

what applications can the 9400 series be found? i found a website that said 9401 was chrysler, 9402 was ford, but it didn't say what years or model or engine sizes to look for.

The 400cfb AFBs are all aftermarket Carter carbs. They never came on anything from the factory.

I'm not 400% sure about this, but I think they came from the factory on 273ci Mopars. Like I said, I could be wrong on this.

  11. I dont think you are wrong...I have a pair of carter afb's, one #4661 and the other a #4663 that are 400's that were originally used on a 69 AMC Javelin small block.:)
