for a 1970 Dodge *******. It's suppose to be a 340 but I need to make sure. Where is the engine ID and date code (and other id #'s) located and is there a site that gives a list of what code engines were put in which type of car. Thanx jim
casting date is in the side of the block should be able to find it, I believe the cid is cast in the side of the block as well, heads? you will have to pull the valve covers to find the casting number on the top of the intake runner. Check out hughes engines, and moparts.com world of info on there.
Look on the side of the block, right under the exhaust manifold. There's a number cast into the block. If the last three digits are 3-1-8, it's a 318. If they're 3-6-0, it's a 360. And if it's 3-4-0, it's a 340. Pretty straight forward. I don't remember the date code location, but I'll take a look in my Mopar engine bible and get back to you.
For the most Mopar info, go over to www.moparts.com and ask there. It is the HAMB of the Mopar world The displacement and casting date are cast into the left hand side of the block below the cylinder deck. '68-71 engines had forged cranks and were internally (nuetrally) balanced (also includes some early '72's). '72-73 had cast cranks and were externally balanced at both harmonic balancer and flywheel and/or torque convertor. If running a clutch, you can have a nuetral flywheel balanced with simple drilling pattern (info is readily available, can probably dig it up for you if needed). If running an automatic, you can buy a balanced flexplate and use a nuetral convertor. Hope this info helps. Mike Bynum
there is also some info stamped on the front of the block, below the driver side head. look for the displacement and year and date info here too.
For the heads, it should have X heads if its original. They are 894 castings and have larger X's cast into the head around the spark plugs. The drivers side of the block has the casting numer which ends in the displacement - the the core revision. Something like 340-2, 340-6, something like that. If you are super lucky it will have a little 340-TA. Nearly all mopars have casting numbers that have the displacement after them. A standard julian style date will be cast into the side of the block a few inches below the casting number. There should also be a partial VIN in two places on the block. On the front of the block under the right cylinder head (hidden by the alternator) and on the drivers side of the block just above the oil pan rail. There is a little machined pad there they stamped the numbers in these places. I know a bunch about these cars if you need any info. I still have a 69' 340 dart in my garage.
That wasn't the only head used in 340's. #915 casting was used as well, and in '73 #587 was the casting for 340. And that X might also be J and still original.
The only heads that would have come on a 1970 340 in an a-body which he asked about would be 894 casting X heads. 915 casting U heads came out on the 70' TA and AAR and ended up accross the line for 71-72. T/A heads have the pushrod drilled differently and need offset rockers on the intake. 587's were used in 73 on 340/360s and in 75-76 on 360's. X heads are all 2.02 intake valve, J heads can have either from the factory, and 587's are all 1.88 intake valves from the factory. I have a set of X, J, and 587's in the garage. The correct heads for a 70 A body should be 894 casting X heads as I said above.
I was just saying that it can still be an 340 with 340 factory head even if the numbers don't match for being "correct heads" for '70 a-body. Now he has all the info he asked for, ain't that great.
MY car ( since sold ) was listed on the ******* registry ( insert comments here...)...my vin was LM23H0R262177. Should find the CID cast into the block as previously mentioned...what color is the car ?
