Just a quick "check into it" for guys selling on the Hamb. Over the years I have probably recieved 150 Canadian Postal Money Orders for US funds, and NEVER had an issue. I recieved one last week, and April went to the bank to DEPOSIT it (not cash it and more then enough funds to cover it) at Chase Bank. They told her that the policy now is they have to run it through "collections" and it will take up to 6 weeks AND cost me $20 for this "service". I told her "thats ****, bring it home". So then I ran it up to my other bank, Compas Bank, and guess what, the EXACT SAME THING, except "only" $15-$16 for this service.

I'm not starting any Canadian/American ********, just telling all of you that sell out of the US that you might want to check your banks policy on this issue. I ate the $15 bucks, rather then going another route. Wasn't the buyers "fault", wasn't my "fault", but sure ****s.

Thats stupid. I have sent canadian money orders drawn in us funds with no issue in the past. I wonder if this is the deal with all US banks now.

Probably due to all the internet scams...

  4. I had a few problems a while back paying for stuff on Ebay and using international postal money orders...it,s Paypal now.On the other hand I have never had a U.S. sent international money order refused at my post office or bank. The times they are a changin....

  5. This ****s - I'd move south if I could - too much ******** with the Canadian gov't and problems with cross border trade. So much for North American Free Trade...

I just mailed a Money Order today, bought it at my local bank.

They nailed me $6.50 CDN plus their exchange rate
for a Money order in US dollars.

I hope his bank doesn't nail him $15.00,
because the check was only for $11.00

Hopefully this situation only applies to Postal Money Orders.

Like I said in the first post, I have probably deposited 150 of these money orders in the past with ZERO issues, including 2 this year. But to have 2 DIFFERENT banks do the same ****, I am just saying "look into it". Here is/was my issue. Because it was a Canadian POSTAL MONEY order, I considered it valid. I already shipped the parts. Do I contact the guy, HOPE he understands, HOPE he takes it back, and HOPE he pays me? Plus not to mention, I drop it in the mail, costs what $1-$1.50 to send. Takes 1-2 weeks to get to him, 1-2 weeks to return to save $15? Wasn't worth the h***le, just means now I have to not accept what I PERSONALLY considered a safe payment.

It's a federal law, part of the homeland security BS .
I have a Canadian hobby shop that has bought from me for years , always used a Canadian bank check that clearly states on the Check "US DOLLAR Account." Last time he sent one the same thing happened to me only they wanted 60.00 $ to handle a 120.00 $ check . I still have it -- don't know what i'm going to do next time he wants to buy product-- I just ate this order --not worth h***eling the guy over-- he did his part .

****, that was what I am concerned about. I recieved a BANK DRAWN check (Canadian) today for $23. In the past, I would consider it valid and sent the part then gone to the bank at my convinience. Now I get to get make sure my bank doesn't want "their share" first. I would have gone in and deposited it today, but was picking up a model A seeedan :D

Considering that our postal service is a govt.corp. just like i believe your postal service is,this is ridiculous. You must pay "CASH"to buy that money order, which is then "cashable" by the addressee, the same as legal tender. The money is guaranteed by the Canada Post ie "The Canadian Govt," Also most Canadian banks have branches all over the U.S.Sounds like another banking industry cash grab.Canadians report these incidents to your "member of parlaiment"so they can make an issue of it.:eek:also thanks to S.R.I.for informing all of us on the HAMB of the situation,so much for "FREE TRADE"EH.

No sweat, I have never had issues shipping to ANYWHERE in the world. I don't even know if it is ALL banks here, but like I said, I have 2 banks with 2 different accounts and both had that same stupid policy. I think it is pure ****. Homeland security my ***. I can understand from "certain" countries, but effin CANADA??????? Canucks are not exactly considered a "threat" to our lifestyle. Maybe one country to our south, but not to the north. I effin HATE Paypal, but I guess if I'm dealing with others then the US, I guess Paypal is back for me.

Good timing for this thread. I just won something on ebay, from Canada, so I'll use PayPal. Good thing to be aware of for those auctions that don't accept PayPal. Probably steer clear of those unless I definitely need the part.

I had the same thing happen. My bank told me up to 8 weeks to get a canadian m/o to clear??? They called the next day left a message for my wife saying they called the bank where it was drawn on and they said it was good so they were gonna put it im my account and if sumpin went wrong they wouldnt charge me anything other than reclaim the money.. Havent heard a thing. The did tell my wife they have to actually mail the m/o to the other bank them selves.

  17. This sounds nuts but I had a similar issue but someone from the States sent me a US money order in US funds. When I was in West Virginia I cashed it at a WALMART when I bought something there. F' the banks! Pretty soon we'll have Walmart mortgages and this is how it starts.

I use Paypal. However, when I sold a car to a fellow from Michigan, he paid with Paypal and I was nailed $55 to deposit the funds into my bank account. Just a heads up...

Can you set up a direct bank to bank transfer and avoid the noid? I just don't understand how doing this sort of stuff to Canadians is protecting the national interest. Oh well, I just saw an article on the net that said the Mexican Government found $208 million in cash in a drug smuggler's house in Mexico City. That's just a drop in the bucket. I live in South Texas and the cops are always finding millions in the door/trunk of some old pickup/car with an illegal Mexican driving it back to Mexico. I just don't see the Canadian connection. Seems like just another way to penalize honest honest folks who are involved in legitimate business deals. And...the free trade thing NAFTA all went to China back in the 90's. The only free trade here is for wets and drugs. Now, here comes Rev. Al Sharpton...saying that controlling the Mexican border is racist...****...somebody shoot me please. ;)

Not only this but banks are now charging $5 to cash a check drawn on that very same bank, if you don't have an account there. Thieves.
