Here is my humble tech on how to make Zoomie baffles. An unfortunate thing, if you don't want to get in trouble with the law. I've built some Zoomie a few month back. They are made from 1 1/2" od, 16ga tubing. Why 1 1/2" you ask, because bigger pipes would not have fit on my exhaust flange. For the baffles, I'm using 1 1/4" od tubing, they slip into the 1 1/2" nicely with some play. Step one: Cut 6" sections, in my case 8 of them. Step two: Make some lay out marks, I did it on 3 sides of the pipe. then I layed out were the holes were going to be, in this case 1" apart, staggered per each quarter turn (I'm confusing myself here). Step three: At your layout marks cut the pipe appox. 1/4" deep on the bandsaw, a hacksaw will work too. Step four: Use the pneumatic hammer with a "pointy" chisel and start making indentation into the pipe, were you cut slices earlier. Step five: Mounting the baffles. I basically drilled holes into the Zoomies one per Zoomie at the bottom about 1" from the end, so you can't see the bolts later. Drilled holes into the baffles about 1/2" from the edge, welded a 5/16" not to the inside. Voila. All thats left to do is to bolt the baffles on the inside of the zoomies. The baffles fit tight now since the pipe has been distorted a bit. I don't have shots of that process but you get the picture. These simple baffles have made huge difference, but not to the were the car sound like an import. Try it. The reason I made the baffles myself is, that I could not find motorcycle ones that would fit, my Zoomies. Besides it's much more fun doing it yourself.
I used these for my zoomies....standard harley drag pipe baffles. Got em off Egay. They fit real good, and they were super cheap ($4.95 a pair) They took about 20 minutes to bang into the pipes and tack em. Sound is pretty good as well. I've seen these anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 inch. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...RK:MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=130083907764&rd=1,1
quick question for you. . . why not just drill holes 1/4" under the size of your chisel diameter and then blast away with the hammer? do the slots make for better flow?
thanks Dreadman, you just saved me $160.00! I was gonna buy those motorcycle baffles for the weedburners on the 'Cancer Car'.but not now. Thanks for thinking "outside the box" Mark.
It does not seem to flare "out" as nice when using an chisel in a hole, cutting the slots worked much better, at least for me it did. Keep in mind the object here is to devert the exhaust flow but not to block it too much.
I saw a rat rod a couple of years ago where the owner simply used coiled up brake lines tacked inside each zoomie pipe. Not sure how it sounded or if it really restricted flow. Anyone else see this method? Todd
Hi there interesting... what sort of difference does it make sound level wise ??? is it really more silent than when you had straight thru zoomies ? Would be interested to know for my own car... Oh, and what are the sound limits on cars on your side of the planet ??? JzF
You just have to experiment, I definetaly did not take a scientific approach, and started using the db meter, all I know is that my motorcycle, is louder than the car now and I never had an issue with my bike.
Sounds damn good. Honestly is there a difference from completely open to with your baffles? Sound levelwise not tone.
I did some tests today. I took the baffles out and started the motor, and the rumble was just great and fricking loud, then I put the baffles back in, and to me it seemed like a significant drop in volume. Then I made four new baffles, just for one side, that had alot more holes/indentations, I even gave the ends a little wack with a hammer. It sounded like the a unassuming late model grocery getter (I'm exaggerating a lil' here), but you get my point. Experiment, start out with my method, if it's still too loud keep going. But make sure, all 8 baffles are the same and the exhaust is still flowing nicely.
"Whiley Coyete...GENIUS!!!" ACME zoomies,LOL! Once again, you've raised the bar for "do-it-yourselfers",Chris.
This monkey used these cheapies from JC Whitney. They work pretty good & keep it on the verge of semi-legal if that's possible with zoomies... but I haven't been stopped by the po-po boys yet. http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/...=internal+baffles&searchbtn.x=0&searchbtn.y=0
When you go to his u tube, check out the related video "the boattail hits the streets" or somethin like that. I like that sum bitach!
dreadman - thanks for taking the time to put this together on here. one quick question ---- which exhaust setup is in place during the "boattail hits the streets" video? baffles or not? thx ed
Absolutely, in fact a cop stopped me today, asking how come your exhaust is so quiet. Needless to say I took the baffles out after he said that.
next question --- what's been done to the engine, speed parts-wise? how much compression? i guess that's two questions not one. thx\ ed
Thank's Dreadman! I made my baffels today and installed them, what a difference in the sound and in the wallet. Thank you for taking the time and posting...
