"bigken" asked me to help him post his latest project. He just got it on four wheel and this is the first I have seen it although I have been giving him advice through the build. I like it! Just my style. Ken will be giving the play by play.
oh ya baby...that truck has got a great look to it....nice work also...give us a parts description...(wishbone years, etc.)if you like...nice truck man...
Kudo's to Rick, for postin' the pics, I appreciate the hell out of it. Been scramblin' at lunch, just like they rest of the folks headed to Roundup. Anyway, been a while gettin' here, but it is a benchmark. Bought this '33 basketcase a little over a year and a half ago from my boss. Took a while to get after it, being my first rod project. Spent the last 25 years, riding Harleys. Started off with strippin' it all off the frame for boxing. As opposed to cutting the complete crossmember out and fabbing a new one, we just cut out the center 'X', heated and bent the remaining 'legs', back into the frame rails, and welding them into the framerails, prior to boxing. I had originally planned on a big-block, so needed a stiff frame, but those plans changed, anyway. Boxed it all in, front x-member to rear x-member. Hunted down a good 9" at a boneyard about an hour outta Dallas, and it'll work just fine after a little is knocked off each end. Driveshaft is another story. Hugh (53Ash here), found it laying in the street one day, on his way to work, threw it in his truck, slid right into the ******, and is just 3" too long. We can fix that. Motor is a 283 PowerPack motor, out of my dad's '58 Nomad. Has about '65k on it, and has never had the heads off since we bought the Nomad in '75. He donated that when he decided on a big 350 crate motor for the '58. Not to mention, the fuel pump took a **** on him, and dumped gas into the crankcase, so it's gonna have to come apart for a good look-see. Sittin' behind it is a simple Saginaw 4-speed, I picked up from Dirty31 (Rusty). Those dang Dirty's are a real inspiration to a lot of us. I'm just glad we're neighbors (relatively, anyway). Got a Vega box, '42 front spindles/brakes. Wheels are original '33, 17" wires. Picked up some original hubcaps that look damn sweet on those wires. After Roundup, it's back in the garage, finish steering, pedals, seats, plumbing brakes, ect.ect.ect....... Goal is July, and to be a PARTICIPANT at the HAMG Drags, come August. My frustratin at being a 'spectator', drives me. I have to give a ton of credit for this project to the folks that make up this thing they call the HAMB. Ever try to explain to an outsider what this HAMB thing IS? Yea, I know, it's hard. There are so many folks I've garnered information from, sold parts to, bought parts from, had parts donated TO ME, given parts too, and so on, that I can't list them. Rick for posting these pics for me, is one example. Anyway folks, I gotta get back to the job, and get some stuff out of the office, before heading south for the weekend. Guys, get busy, don't give up, and keep inspiring those that get booged down. I am guilty as hell of getting 'paralysis from ****ysis'. Like Rick told me one day, we're gettin' too old to go slow on this stuff. Gotta 'git-er-done', so to speak, so we got more time to play. Stay tuned.
Runnin' all the '33 bones, split, and the rear one's beefed up a bit. Along with a panhard bar and torque bar off the read end. Gonna have to handle those 'launches', come August.
Got the fenders, but think they are gonna stay packed away for a while. Keep after it, it'll happen. I'm diggin' the hell out of it.
Me too JH! I like how that truck sets. Yep Ken, as we get older we are limited to the number of projects we get to do. Time and Money. Keep us posted. Wish I could make the Hamb drags to see it up close. The Cinematic is in Ohio. Here is the info. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148892&highlight=cinematic
Ken, I swear you got more irons in the fire than I'd ever know what to do with. That truck is looking good!
Ken, WOW!,what a trip down memory lane.My first"running"hot rod was a 1933 p-up,looked a lot like your's.Circa 1961/62. Running a stock 59-A flathead, juice brakes, brush rustoleum red,no fenders, hood or running boards. All nut and bolt construction, did not know what welding was! Yup,a So.Dak. farm boy. Thanks for the memory, glider P.S. still have the emergency brake handle and gas linkage for it????
Glad I could help ya. It motivates me every time I'm in the garage. No, don't have the e-handle, but do have the gas pedal linkage. (unclear on the mounting of, however.)
Ken, Your my hero Buddy. Keep at it man. Me you and PBRmeASAP will all have to roll into the round together next year...
Ol' Big Ken don't know it yet But it WILL be channeled cause as soon as he gets a seat in it i'm gonna see if i fit in it. I ***ume once im in it then it will channel itself...Hehehhehe I'm damn glad to see it as a roller.
Bigken, Super looking truck. I like the direction your headed with it. Only disappointment I see is that you changed your signature. that's OK too as I've made several copies of your old one and have it plastered everywhere (carry a copy in my wallet to share). Even comitted it to memory I liked it so much. Thanks, Frank
Rat, good idea, major pickup invasion...................PBR's p/u is sweet. Missed meetin' his ***, too. Damn, I just **** at bein' social. BigTony, you can drive the *****, if you can get-cho *** behind the wheel. The new crossmember will do the job. Frank, feel free to change your sig to include the quote. I just thought folks might be gettin' tired of hearin' it from me! Thanks for all the kudo's. Can't wait to smoke those rear meats.
