If I knew this kid, I would talk to him and try to show him that his car is unsafe and a product of bad taste. He might not know better, but he should be old enough to have the brains to ask someone. There is so many resources today, that if someone wants to educate themselves, they can find out just about anything. I'm only eighteen, so I'm probably not much older (if at all) than this kid, but I know well enough that dumping fiberglass resin all over a steel '32 and making a rope throttle cable are bad ideas. If this kid really was a car enthusiast, he would learn this from reading magazines, studying other builders, and talking to people.

doing dumb things is a direct result of NOT listening and comprehending... what would make this any different?

let him figure it out through ridicule... its tough love, dont worry so much about this kids welfare, thats his mom and dads job.

The fact that we don't have a clue whether or not he has ever had anyone to listen to.

It seems to me that the bigger concern was others welfare. As far as we know he is still driving around unsafely, risking others because as far as we know, nobody has told him any different.

See that's the point, I think it's progressed to the point that the shitier the car the more proud they are.
    Kinda rat rod rebels.
In some cases even when you try to explain to proper way of doing things it is ignored. In my experience.
I am not an expert, so I joined a club to have other people to ask, and bounce things off of.
They found some real unsafe shit I did, explained why it was, and how it should be.
Know I know and can pass that on.

Some people are into the iron and some the "life".

A kid driving a Hot Rod is NOT A POSER. I am very opinionated about Hot Rod styles, but one thing I know for sure, I have a deep respect for any one who is actually driving around a Hot Rod. As a younger Hot Rodder still in my twenty’s whose car is radically z’ed, channeled and black. I get called a rat rodder a lot and as much as I want to punch these people in the face. I just say to myself they don’t know any better and I will get in to much trouble to set them straight. I have never seen this car and it could be built like $hit but the kid is driving it around and as stupid as a parachute cord is it is probably just a short term fix so he can get a few miles on his rod and show off his hard work. If he breaks down or it fucks up he will learn and replace with a smarter solution, if it’s made or poor craftsman ship it wont last long on the road.

I remember two kids driving their Hot Rod down to our shop with no front breaks hooked up, open drive shaft, the whole driver side rusted out, oil flying all over the place and scary as hell electrical wires. The rod was dangerous as hell but the kids had done the work to get it going and drove it, although slowly, a few miles to get the adrenaline they deserved out of their hard work. We looked at it and made our comments about what was dangerous, defiantly not calling them idiots or posers, and laughed at their ridiculous reliability run. To me this is what Hot Rodding is about youth creating there own style and driving it themselves. It has been four years since their first voyage and their scary “rat rod” is now a great looking roadster with the kinks gone through and fixed up. Safety is number one priority and so is keeping the rod on the road driving

The poser is they guy who talks sh@t and drive’s nothing!

Not here though. Everyone is an typical 68'-'72 Muscle Car fanboy or an truck enthusiast. Atleast for the most part.

Yes, it is possible to build an complete piece of shit, without taste, but anything can be cleaned up or done over.

Shadow, what did he say when you confronted him and told him your full opinion of his car? You did do that, right?

  12. Not too long ago, some kids got some really big sentence for stealing a stop sign that resulted in a fatal crash. One was a girl, but they were in tears when the stiff sentence was read. They got YEARS! I don't remeber how many. But it was no joke

no I didn't confront the guy on the "rat rod"issue I just told him be prepared for a failure for the states saftey inspection, I believe it was one of his maiden voyages out of the cave he built it in.
the reason I posted the story was because the people around him were being let to believe that his car was true representation of what this site is about. I actually don't care if he kill's himself driving that pile of shit it was the fact he took a stop sign from a road that I or someone else may be traveling on. and as for being young thats not an offense, I was young once to and built alot of cars on a budget but I never comprimised my saftey or anyone elses for that matter.
I've been drag racing for over 20 years and every time someone gets hurt or killed street racing they news says it was because of "drag racing" and it's paints a bad image on the sport mush the same as he is portraying his car as the status que. I'm no ones daddy ,teacher or the local hot rod police so I keep my mouth shut but after reading some of the replies maybe next time I see the guy I'll turn him on to the site and tell him he's the real deal and let you guys school him?

I care. If he kills himself, someone who likes the nanny state & doesn't want to accept responsibility for their own actions will scream & cry until they pass some laws. Those laws won't discriminate between rat rods, traditional rods, street rods, muscle cars, etc. It will have verbiage like "modified vehicle" or something similarly generic that gets interpreted & enforced by people w/o a clue. This is bad for everyone.

Educate him. Not to, is negilgent & irresponsible.

This sint an issue of nobody here doing something stupid before or an issue of age. Its an issue of common sense. I'm a young rodder at age 23 but I know there are things that just should'nt be done on a car, such as his throttle cord or one bolt in the driver seat. The problem with this dumb ass is that it makes other home built cars look unsafe, which is gonna cost all of us in the end.

And someone should tell him that. Explain to him how he should make changes. That there are all sorts of people that would be willing to help him if he was interested.

If he laughs you off or says no, then make fun of him.

  21. To hell with telling him about the issues on his car.... tell him to stay in school.

I think this thread made me dumber.

Alright it's time to let this urban legend die. Maybe it'll come back around in a few years. I can't believe all the posts on this thread. I can't believe I'm posting on it!!??
