I have a 28 model A axel and spindles in my 27 T pickup they are holding up a 440 chrysler. Are these spindles strong enough for this? Are they forged ?? this is a rat rod and dont want any new parts. Also this car will be driven hard as all my cars do... thanks voigtspeed
Model A spindles, as with all Ford spindles and i-beam axles and many other parts are forgings. I would only be nervous about using any Model T steering stuff such as spindles, axle, radius rods etc. even with a modern 4banger.
Then you are in the wrong place. Head on over to Ol Skool Rodz, they will treat you right. This is no place for ghetto rat traps. If you plan on staying around, post an intro.
Boy,I don't know. You've got 80 year old metal designed to go maybe 40 mph and you're running a 440 hard?. I haven't run your application, or had a lot of experience with '28 spindles, but it doesn't sound all that safe to me. Check out and compare the spindle used in the car your engine came out of-and remember that both Henry and Chrysler engineered their parts to be only as safe as they had to and just as cheap as they could be. Just my two cents.
SAFE? Who ****in cares? Run em till they put your front end in the dirt. Oh and to boristheblade I forgot you guys up in minnesota were so much in the know.
Yeah, thats an intelligent answer. When his front end goes in the dirt and wipes out a soccer mom with a minivan full of kids, do you think someone might care?
Question:When is a rat rod not a rat rod? Answer: When you're on the HAMB If you are concerned, measure the spindle diameter where the inner and outer wheel bearings ride and compare it to a later early Ford spindle like most people use without worrying. Compare steering arms too. If they are the same, you should be ok. To be really safe you could have the spindles checked for cracks by a process such as magnaflux.
how come everytime there is a accident its always a soccer mom with a van load of kids some times parts break and the cars comes to a stop,no big deal
Don't forget the flat keyed washer between the outer bearing and the castle nut. Ask CADILLACKID... He forgot his and the p***enger side nut over tightened itself, got hot and took the tip off the spindle. If I recall, that mishap was originally blamed on old/bad spindles and got everyone's undies in a wad over the safety of vintage spindles.... when it was in fact an error in ***embly. Do like BOBW said. Measure and inspect the bearing surfaces. If they look worn, or spun, to the point that they might have become hot, then look for some better ones. Otherwise... run 'em. JOE
Sometimes.... What happens when a spindle breaks while you're on a two lane blacktop with someone coming from the other direction? Are you willing to bet that it will only happen when you are on an abandoned stretch of road? Betting on your own life is your business. When something comes loose on your rolling pile of junk parts and kills somebody else, it becomes everybodys business. Not only does it affect whoever you hit, things like that also cause new laws to be made. Then it affects those of us who actually use some common sense when we build our stuff... Voigtspeed is showing that he posesses some common sense by asking the question in the first place...
people like you cause new laws to be made by making my buisness your own we all take risks when we go out on the road any car can break at any time you should be supporting my right to make a rolling pile of junk as i support your right to build yours and when a new anti-car law is up for a vote you should do your best to make shure it benifits all cars and people and not just the fancy uppidy rods out there
No fancy, uppity Rod here, all I have is a '65 F100 with a SBC in it. Not even a fancy paint job, just whats left of the original. You won't find any worn out junk parts on it though. It may look like a worn out piece of **** on the surface, but it's mechanically sound underneath. If something even starts to fail on it and I don't have the money to fix it right, it sets in the driveway until I do have the money. I don't know about you, but if someone else got hurt or killed because I cut corners building a "Toy", I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
well you are a very safe person, i on the other hand drive it till it breaks cuz half the fun for me is fixing the darn thing yes i would feel bad if my car broke and i injured/killed another person but honestly i dont think about it...........ok ok talk about a thread hyjack back to the spindles
Voigtspeed- Personally I would be reluctant to use them. I have new forged spindles on my Tudor and with the bolt on arms from P&J or Speedway they look very similar to the old stuff. My roadster project has a model A axle and the first thing I did was ditch the A spindles and found a nice set of 37-41 round back spindles and a set of juice brakes. I'm not sure what you're planning on for stopping power but Speedway does sell an adaptor ring to install juice brakes on model A spindles. I'll try to stay above the fray here, but if you want to hang around on the HAMB don't use the term rat rod. This is a place for traditional cars, and the whole "rat rod" deal kind of marginalizes you. Look around and see what this place is about and post an intro. Good luck.
I think the spindle will carry the weight but the later ones are easier to get good bearings and brakes for and,,,,,,,,, ,Voight Speed obviously can't read cause he didn't post an INTRO. Go post an Intro and stick around. You'll find the help you need, although you are gonna have to put up with some flack from time to time.LOL The Alaskan Rocket is obviously a dumb*** because he's "typing off" and hasn't posted an "INTRO" either. MotoMech, oops I mean Mouth, I mean ***,can read and type but,,,,,obviously just doesn't give a ****. Watta ****!!!!!! They'll be sweepin' your *** up with a stick and a s**** before long.I just hope there won't be other carnage to go along with it.
Ohhhhh, wait,,,,It's coming to me now,,,,,a phrase you've heard most of your short *** life,,,,,,,,,"""**** FOR BRAINS""" I couldn't care less about you. You're prolly Tom Whiteheads brother or illegitimate child or sumthin'. He was originally from out your way,and just about as smart. Tom built a chopper once and in the interest of beauty ground the welds for the downlegs below surface at the neck and then sculpted them with bondo for that smooth look.(I'm laughing just remembering this)It'll be alright says he. Then he stopped at a stoplight one afternoon and went to take off damn the damn thing broke in two and dropped 'im like a dirty shirt.LMAO Several years later that same bright boy lit a match under a trailer house lookin' for a propane gas leak.(took care of tha crazy *** hair) It's the people unaware of your ignorance and carelessness I find myself concerned with. Stick to the motorcycles and leave the hot rods to someone else,at least you're less likely to do any long term damage to someone else that way.
Of course fixin' it after you beat the hell out of it and bent all your valves or ****tered your rear end in a drag race is half the fun, especially if you make it stronger or better than it was. But using cheap or weak parts on you car that could have an effect on somebody's safety is stupid, I just hope nobody you care about get's injured or killed by an idiot who just doesn't care. It's guy's like you that cause the cops to give all hotrodders a hard time, they can't tell the difference between a hotrodder and a immature ratrodder!
thats my point ****tard i dont want you to worry about me just watch out for me and my RATROD on the street a part may fall off and smack your dumb *** in the head
welcome to the world of hotrodding it seem to me that the cops have always given hotrodders a hard time....too low...too loud...speeding etc
Listen here little buddy, I've been ridin' harley's and drivin' hot rod's for more than 22 years and I've never had problems with cops, but thanx to idiots like you who drive unsafe and dangerous cars and don't give a damn about any thing except getting attention in they're "ratrods" cops are beginning to look at hotrodders a lot closer, wich just makes life a lot harder on every body. Soon the government will start inspecting our cars on a yearly basis for compliance with they're laws, like they do in germany and all that because a few careless idiots are causing accidents that could be avoided if a little thaught and attention would be given to safety. Oh, one more thing, is the little kid in your avatar your kid? Well let's hope some body who doesn't think about others safety doesn't put it in a wheelchair or kills it because their car is unsafe! That would be to bad. But what do you care, right? You just don't think about things like that, do you?
""thats my point ****tard i dont want you to worry about me just watch out for me and my RATROD on the street a part may fall off and smack your dumb *** in the head"" You are pointless Oblio, and obviously have a flair for missing the point. The point was I don't "give a ****" about you,"****tard"! I "give a ****" about the rest of us,"****tard"! More than likely that part will fall off and hit you in your "dumb ***" or cause you to hit something harder than your head. You should see this video,as you and this guy are prolly ******uously linked,"**** Tard". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMPztuRTRXg Only you prolly won't be so lucky. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
Seems we have gotten a bit off track. Bottom line, "A"spindles weren't designed for the stress a 440 will deliver, hence making them unsafe. Always drive defensively and like it or not other people are on the highways and you are responsible to your actions and should care if they are injured or killed them because of your neglect
WEll! On the original post, I wouldn't trust that weight and torque to those spindles. I know we all want traditional but sometimes you have to be safe first. Yo-Baby, Johnnykck, what can I say?? The little **** head just wont listen and certainly doesn't 'get it' You know what I LOVED about the Army, **** heads like that got "Taught" that they were wrong. I have a feeling someones gonna take him out the back and 'council' him on whats what! I just wish I had one of those traditional RAT ROD Willy's jeeps to do up because they are just so 'hard core' and what hot rodding is all about. I better go sell my 28, 38 and my g***er. Hell I'm embarr***ed I had a couple of 32 coupe's now............. Hey, anyone can understand sarcasm. Its the lowest form of wit so they say. I chose it as someone as ****ing stupid as Motormech may drag his **** up the intelligence scale enough to understand it.
