Hi great site, glad i found it, anyway my ? does anyone know of a place that resizes axle bores in california or some where close and resonably priced? i called one guy, pretty popular and he quoted me 150 per side, i only need one side done the other is fine and i can get a new axle at speedway for 200.00 its a 37-41 ford axle . any help would be great thanks
Seems like any automotive machine shop should be able to handle the simple boring and honing of an axle. Do you need it sleeved too?
thats what i thought but the first 5 said they don't do it, i still have more to call. one guy said they shrink the bore and re-ream it, i thought they would resleave it so i'm not sure. its not that far out of round
There was a post on here in the last 6 weeks or so on this subject. Someone said they put a kingpin in the axle bore, heat the area and beat the **** out of it with a big hammer. Look for the post for a more accurate description.
Are you talking about kingpin bores or spring perch bores?? Either should be able to be fixed at a big truck spring and axle repair facility.
There was an article in one of the rat magazines a year ago or so, that showed to bore the hole to 1" and then sleeving with bronze. Personally I think I'd sleeve with steel so that you could run a Tig bead around the top and bottom to regain some of the lost strength.
i need the kingpin bores done, i'll try calling some more machine shops, someone has to do it . thanks for the help
AT $150.00 PER SIDE.... IT SOUNDS LIKE HES TRYING TO " REAM " YOU !! I HAD AN EARLY PLYMOUTH AXLE BORED TO FIT '40 FORD SPINDLES, GUY CHARGED ME $80.00 TO DO BOTH SIDES. BUT YER GONNA NEED TO SLEEVE IT, I JUST DID A HEAVY '32 AXLE THE HAD BEEN BORED TO EARLY CHEVY KING PINS WHICH WERE BIGGER. GLAD I KNOW A FEW MACHINIST'S
Find a small tool and die shop and they'll be able to do this ina Bridgeport mill just like the article in the rat rod mag. but at the hourly rate of $50 per hour, it's time and material and it would well be a 2 - 3 hour job...find someone you know who works in the trade who can do it after hours.... the advice to put a kingpin in the hole after heating it up and peening the outside is a good idea... But 37-41 axles are very available...why not just pick up another one?
i was going to get another but i already drilled mine and don't want to waste the time it took only a 1/2 hour but it looks good and its still a good axle
i have seen this post a couple times..and i wondered why you just didn't get another axle... you should have just got another axle here is a cheap lesson for you : never put time/effort/money into something that you don't know for sure is ok sounds like you have a real nice wall hanger..that's all it is , get used to it how do i know this? experience......
and now you have the experience....and it only cost you 1/2 hour when i think of the lessons i have learned.... that was a bargain for you
don't want to waste an axle that i think is still good, only needs i side resized, that should cost around 75.00 not counting the time to find another one that is not in the same shape althought new ones are not that expensive
thanks for the help everyone, this is a great site. i started to think i've already spent 1/2 hour looking for someone to do it, so i decided to do it myself i have everything i need mill, reamer, welders, shouldn't take more than 45 min to bore the axle ,install a steel sleeve, weld it in, and ream it. i'll post when i'm done. thanks again H.A.M.B
