Question is any one out there with a unibody w/ stright axel car, falcon, comet, nova or whatever how did you set up the front subframe? start at the firewall and build new or use the orig? I want to use the orginal and remove the innerfender/shock tower and brace it to mount front clip, axel , motor, ect. my plan for now is to use a 61 f100 axel and a 302/c6 in my 61 comet any pics of the engine bay w/ the shock towers removed would be helpfull and also any 289/302 pics thanks for any input -zimm-
damn smaller front tires on that falcon and it would be WICKED... cool car either way though no way around it..
you can use the original front frame rails, as long as they are solid with no rust. Measure the center to center of the frame rails and measure the centers of the leaf spring pads on the axle. You will want to mount the leaf springs directly under the frame rails. You may need to have the axle shortened to do this. Also measure the original front track width of the Comet, and try to keep the straight axle width within these specs. You can remove the shock tower and fill in with sheet metal or leave it open. Additional bracing across inner aprons is optional. see link for pics of my straight axle conversion in a 64 Fairlane http://members.shaw.ca/blueoval/64fairlane.htm
Having just hacked apart and re-welded the front subframe of my falcon - I would suggest replacing or at least heavily renforcing the from subframe firewall-forward if you are going to get in there. You might want to consider running 2" Tube back to the rear subframe and up in the stock front subframe location. This will stiffen the ch***is immensly.
These pics are from a '61 Falcon. Plans are for a 327 and use the subframe boxes that are there. Also adding some tube braces back to the firewall. Dan
My buddy, Ford Freak's '60 g***er-style Falcon wagon with the 351C when it was being mocked up. Can't find the pics of it finished up, but it looks VERY cool!
Zimm, Mine are removed all together . There is a brace from the firewall to the front corners of the subframe . I`ll try & get some pictures this long weekend and post them. G***erman
