A buddy of mine just called and I am trying to diagnose a problem via telephone. Scenario: 1967 Camaro with a TH-350 Was driving fine no symptoms, then last time started it felt like it was going in and out of gear. Fluid levels good, not burnt. He only drove it a mile or so to get it home. By the time he made it back to his driveway he had to rev it pretty high to get it to move. So what are your thoughts? Pump let go? Converter gone south?
I'm not sure if it's this simple, but mine did that when I lost one of my vacuum caps off the modulator. Bryan
That's how they act if they lose a lot of fluid. Are you sure it's not really low on fluid and the fluid is foamed up and splashing around giving you a false reading on the dipstick? Check the transmission cooling lines for a major leak, like if a hose clamp was loose.
Humm, my th-350 acted just like that before I discovered it was spilt in half....yes, IN HALF! The motor and trans mounts keep the pump somewhat engauged but things just dont work. Hope thats not the issue though...
i just went to a shop to pick my th350 and he has stacks of these damn things all of them cracked in half but they all cam from dragsters
What gear would go in and out? If it were third, that could explain why there is no reverse because the high and reverse clutches could have gone out or you there is wear on either the drum or pump stator areas. More than likely its time for a rebuild.
Hey Roothawg, What happened on this? This happened to me this weekend pulling into the Roundup and had to haul it back to Dallas on a trailer.
I was going to suggest the same thing. No reverse cold ****** usually means clogged filter. But that usually means you will need to pack it anyway. On the otherhand. The Turbo350 that was behind the mill in the Pusher acted a little like than it only had second and second was iffy. The insides were a mess TCI kevlar band was so frayed you could pinstripe with it. On close inspection the hawgs head was spiderwebbed. Turnes out the 11" converter coughed some of its guts up when it turned loose and they went through the ******. Contrary to popular they just aren't a good dragrace ******.
UH Huh The 400 is all B&M pieces it shouldn't come apart. Funny thing about it is I got it out of a Stude g***er guess where its headed.
how do you figure that? i use there converters and trans parts exclusively. the problem described in this post sounds like: trans low on fluid obstruction in the valve body clutches wasted pump gone bad torque converter bad
I rebuilt a 727 years ago using a TCI kit.....cheap parts and never shifted right....I gutted the trans and got a kit from NAPA instead. And I've done a few trans since with NAPA kits with excellent results. I like Turbo Action and a few others for race apps....... If I buy a part or get service from a company and I'm not happy with the part or they don't treat me right, I NEVER deal with that company... EVER...they have lost MY business....TCI, MSD, and a few others...just the way I am......
I have rebuilt a few th 350"s all with NAPA kit also had great results never a problem added a B&M shift kit from them also work great ! one sitting in my model A frame now . Cant wait to finish the body and here second gear snap loose!
prolly bad but, over fill it with a couple of quarts and see if it moves if so, the filter has dropped into the pan and not picking up fluid.........
The truck got up to about 230 waiting in line to enter the Roundup and then this problem kicked in. She usually runs at about 180 and about 210 in traffic.
