Being a native off minnesota and having lived in north dakotw for many years I, have seen many of this type of conversion. They were donhe loong before snomobiles etc. were around, when these were converted they were just old cars noone ever would have guessed at future values. Times used to be alot different before our current spoiled and throw away society. If some ignorant and sheltered people need to degrade ingenuity so be it.
Thats my buddy's car. He bought it recently to make a rod out of it. It was built by a farmer back in the 50's to get to town in the snow. I have seen it up close and let me tell you, it is some down home farmer engineering in that car! Hey, I think he still has the wheels if anyone is interested...
The sled tracks for the front of cars were sold that way back in the day. There were actually a good bit of them sold.
This made an appearance on the HAMB a couple years ago when it was found and put up for sale. Positively great example of innovation to fill the need for winter transportation in a rural area. It's a very nice historical artifact but the huge demand for hot rod material ***ures that stuff like this will disappear. As far as the availability of 4WD back then, Marmon-Harrington had an arrangement with Ford building trucks and some cars including military prototypes. Too expensive for this farmer I'm sure.
The way he mated the stock wheels to the rims in the front is too cool. You have to give it to them for innovation.
I saw it when it was on Ebay and thought that it was pretty cool. People had to do whatever it took to get around back then. And the people these days think they are being new and creative by putting 22's and 24's on their cars! HA! I laugh at them. The old timers did that back in the 40's!
THAT IS PERFECT FOR MY POTATO FARM UP HERE IN NORTHERN MAINE...I'M STILL DEALING WITH SNOW....I HAVE A LITTLE 289 MOTOR JUST WAITIN TO GO IN SOMETHING...JOHN
It was on the property of my brothers neighbor, I took the pictures, but never could get ahold of the guy, kept bugging my brother to get ahold of the guy and get a price, but the guy was always away in Idaho, then my brother said the guy wanted $3300. for it but ended up giving it to his son. Dan
My 2c. I think that is what it is all about! I do love 4X4 so perhaps I am biased, but I have seen much worse done to cars in the name of rat rods.
