As usual had another great time at the Round up. One of the big reason I
went down was to check out Mcphails Chevy and Meyers '57 Caddy. The '56
was worth all of the HAMB hype and turned out very Kool. The Kustom is a
radical mild kustom. So many changes on the car will go unnoticed because
it looks like the way it should be. The Headlites is one of my favorite
changes. Jeff Myers did a great job with the body mods and cannot wait to
see the caddy. Pictures of the Caddy, sorry I forgot to take them.

I borrowed the link from HAMBer to show off the Chevy........

McPhail ****s but his Chevy is bad ***...

Thanks JimA for the great deal on the little page magazines. I felt like a
hunter that bag his deer when I was carring the box to my car. The guys
will be happy when they attend the Stray Kat 500.

Thanks for letting me hang out with ya guys. Saturday night watching
the guys cruize, I almost yell'd....... "Dig a hole!!"

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

Jeff extended and smooth'd the drip rails then extended them around the
top. It turned out real Kool.

    Happy Trails,

I just checked my memory card... I took 67 pictures of that car... I'm not a 60's era show rod guy, but that car does it for me. McPhail might ****, but he sure is smart.

Some of the threads in the Roundup section spoke of spectators late models taking up parking spaces out on Congress that should have been occupied by hot rods & customs. I got to South Congress about 10:30 or 11 Saturday night, parked in the church lot. McPhail's car was parked there also. Told my wife that it was a crying shame that he had to park back there where very few would see that car that night. Late- model driving spectators were missing seeing the most beautiful car there because they took up so many streetside parking spots.:(

That is a most beautiful '56 chevy I've ever seen. It is -the- car I would have taken home from the show. Everything is right on, I can't imagine how much of a pain in the *** it was working that roof...it is perfect. The interior is unbelieveable, there is so much work in that thing.

    Now, where's that bumper at?

THANK YOU !!! It was worth every second I put into the car when I saw jimmy vaughn and lee pratt checking it out. It means alot too me, hearying all you guys really dig it. We tryed very hard for the 60's kustom vibe. I didn't think this car should follow up dennis' 56 but he was right it could be done. modifications are.. shaved drip rail. roof rib, scoop on roof , extended the headlights forward and inch and a half, frenched antenna's ,shaved handles ,packard taillights, rib on deck lid, moved the humps on the dash. sean at south austin speedshop did a great job on feeling our vibe. this car just came together. I'm glad everyone really liked it.

  14. Did anybody get a shot of the dome light installed? Sean let me take a look at it, it's a work of art.

I'm still blown away by this car, thanks for eveyone taking pics of it, I must have totally forgot I had a camera in my pocket! The interior is amazing! I'm 6'-6" so I really had to bend over to check out the headliner...and check it out I did and told everyone around me to check it out as well.

Funny how my top two vehicles from the show had Fat Lucky interiors!

And the best thing? It wasn't tucked away behind some velvet ropes where you couldn't appreciate the car...

Sorry, I need to go wipe up my drool puddle now.

I asked the same thing about the vent. I thought it was probably a cut down Impala piece. Dennis said that it wasn't. Jeff made it.

I've seen the pictures post all over here and the car looks great. But I don't think they are really doing it justice. The car really is more than a sum of its parts. I don't know how to explain it, but there is an "aliveness" about the car that doesn't come across in the pictures. Very few new builds give me this same feeling. It's usually the older, been around the block, cars that give that vibe. It's like the car already has a history.

And I think that Jeff Meyers is a custom genius. He gets it.

I really like the g***er look, but that has taken over as my favorite 56. I wish I could see that car in person.

Thanks for the kindness.... nobody seemed to notice the unfinished things that drove me crazy. the bumper wasn't right when we went to put it on Friday morning so that'll have to wait til it gets replated. there is a long list of fine detail stuff to be done before Paso. Bob Bleeds words made the entire build worth it. One of my idols, Rod Powell, gave the car his award. I was speechless. thanks to all who dug the car and 'got' what we were shooting for. I helped, guided, pushed and prodded getting the car done. no one had much faith in the project when we started, and I don't blame them, it IS a tri five after all, how could one of those be cool?.......
the car was built from my interpretations of what cars looked like in Wichita at the time seconds before thin whitewalls became the fashion. little details from conversations with local heroes like Elden ***us, Ronnie ****, Joe Casto, Hub Harness and Darryl Starbird. The Wichita look had a rake, scavenger pipes, red crown valvestem caps, painted and reversed Buick rear wheels, big n littles.....
As a lot of you know, I had done a bit of research here on the HAMB about chopping the top. Knowing that I wanted the interior to be a focal point, we opted to leave the windows big enough to see into. after that was decided, the body mods came into play as we went along, we had a theme and we just had to make sure every piece was modified to fit. we decided not to go radical full custom, but rather radical MILD custom. there was no concept drawing, no set in concrete plan other than the vision of what was in my head. hours of conversation and hundreds of middle of the night ideas came into play. I was truly lucky to have had developed a relationship with Jeff that allowed me to be able to communicate my ideas. HE KNEW what I meant when I said certain keywords. take the color for example, I wanted an early sixties metallic, no pearls, no candies, something that might be painted in a Wichita driveway in 1960-61.....I used the words FROSTY BLUE a lot and looked at a couple of paint chips, I wanted the car to glow at night like Jimmie White's Caddie.....Jeff came up with the custom mix.......
The interior, I WISH it was designed by me......again, communication is the key.....I collected some pics from old magazines, a few sketches and a lot of keywords for FatLucky's......over the top, but not stupid. I wanted a possible diamond shape in the headliner and maybe the doorpanels. i wanted it to NOT LOOK STOCK. Puffy pleats and inserts. no pearl naugahyde, just materials that might've been available in 61........Sean was set free to create and follow His vision of my loose ideas.....I have no idea how he came up with what he did from my suggestions, but I think the smartest thing I did was to set him and Jeff loose.......they are artists
there are a thousand details about mechanics and processes I could mention. there are also a couple hundred other folks like Voodoo Jim, JD, Jimmie White, and Joe Casto without whose help this project would never have flown.
This is by far the most expensive car I've ever built, but it's by far not a mega dollar car either......money can't buy soul........
thanks for the kind words again........and Rob Fortier is a god to me.....

Funny you say that. I had emailed a couple pics of the car to a non-HAMBer friend that didn't get to make it to Austin this year. In my email, I said almost the exact same thing. The car has a real presence to it that you just feel when it pops into your peripheral vision.

As for the front bumper... I'm not convinced it even needs it... Of course I'll reserve final judgment for when I see the car with the bumper on, but for some reason, I kinda dig it not being there.

Can someone tell me where to find wheel caps like that? Got an Imperial I plan to custom and those are EXACTLY the wheel treatment I've been envisioning...

It ****s to be so far from the action!!
