hey guys, my brother just picked up a 31 ford slant window sedan body for a great deal. needs some standard patches but haven't seen much out there that says "slant window". he needs all the lower patch panels (cowl, doors inner/outer, rear panel) and the floor pieces from the rear doors back. anyone have a good place to get all these from? I'm guessing some of these are the same for other models but I remember slantwindow having some unique stuff. thanks for the help!
bump for day 2!!! somebody has to know what panels are available for these guys. it's a 1931 murry bodied 4 door sedan with the slant windshield.
Actually, you are kinda on your own if you want the patches to be correct. I do quite a few "slant bodies" so I have taken the time to make the proper dies and I fab my own patches in-house. In a pinch you can use a door patch panel for a Victoria however you need to be aware that when you buy patches to make sure the lower bead is not "flat" since it should have a curvature. Some patch panels offered do not have this curve and it makes the repair look awful when you stand back and look at the job. Speaking of curvature, the cowl patch panels for the S/W cars is different than the regular cars. Maybe this isn't an issue for what you are building but you can use the regular patch panels if you will use templates to make the correct shape. Use a shrinker & and stretcher to make you some templates to use. The inner door patch panels are something that we make in-house using a tipping wheel die. They also have a curve that is tough to replicate on a straight brake. That is why we use a tipping wheel. On the rear floor pan, --again you are kinda on your own. It is all pretty basic sheetmetal fab if you are trying to just make something that works. If you are trying to replicate what was there originally, you really need to have a pattern & some templates to work off of. Hope this helps some.
Wow! Good info! I need lower patch panels for my S/W. Just cowl and door panels. I saw them at either Mikes, Macs, or Sac. Vintage Ford. Can't remember wich one. It says they are for the S/W, Murray Fordor Town Sedan in the part description. That body looks pretty solid. What did he pay for it, if I may ask?
Oh, BTW... I hope you have the visor panel for that thing! They're sorta' hard to find. They are not being reproduced. Just an FYI.
thanks brent. looks like he will be fabbing up 4 inners! I did it on one of my 32 doors but that was only because I'm cheap! most of the car is in good shape and it is exceptionally straight. the door bottoms are the worst. the rear subrails aren't a big deal because he is talking about putting it on 32 rails. I'm not sure if he's got the header panel or not. if not he may be able to find one from the guy he bought the body from. as far as pricing lets just say he got a good deal. I haven't found the door panels that scooter was talking about in the places he mentioned. the only ones I found were 30-31 murray fordor panels not 31 SW panels. (is there a difference??)
There is a difference. It will say slant window Fordor for sure in the description. They do exist. I've seen them. I'll see if I can figure out which catalog I saw them in.
Still not seeing them listed on the websites. I thought I saw them in one of my printed catalogs. Maybe this is what I was thinking of: (top of listing) http://www.vintageford.com/sect_sea...l A&Category=Sheetmetal&StartRow=81&PageNum=5 Are all the 30-31 Murray Fordor lower cowl and door panels the same? Obviously everything above the beltline is different, but what about the lower portion of the car? Are the lower curves around the bottom bead more pronounced than a standard Murray Fordor? How about door length? This is a pretty important thread for us guys with Slant Window projects!!
The Slant Windshield cars were the "new"style of body construction with more steel and less wood, the preview for the visorless 32-34 cars to come. The aftermarket has been slower to make repair parts for them than any of the other A cars, perhaps their market research shows too small potential demand, if there is such a thing as market research in the antique parts business.
