I may be wrong, but I think I heard the story of this car on a model car board.
Seems the original owner sold it and years later bought it back and was going to restore it to its original shape . Unfortunately he fell ill and died. His widow kept it for a while but it was apparent she couldn't arrange to get it finished. Did unclescoob buy it from her? Its a beautiful custom that has true provenance.
Rickster ... do you have the full story on this beautiful car?

I believe that car came up in the "Ugly-*** Customs" thread.

I'd love to resurrect it, but that's not really in the cards right now.

This custom is awesome! This is the type of car you saw in the '50s little Kustom books, back when everybody was an individualist and didn't follow "trends". She almost looks like something that Frank Maratta would've built on the East Coast. I've love to know the story behind this one too. Hopefull UnklScooby, Rickster or someone can give us the lowdown.

I love it when the "HOT ROD" guys talk **** about KUSTOMS, which they know **** about...

stick to your power to weight ratios and let the Kustom fans have their fun.
(PS, i think it could be pretty neat)

Its part of the "The 0nly cool **** in the world is in my driveway" syndrome.
I hear it all the time. "Von Dutch had no talent or imagination, Ed Roth was a hack, Barris made no contribution to rodding, and every old custom is "ugly"
Too bad history means so little to so many. I'd sell my mom for that car.

If we are voting, I say it is VERY COOL. At a minimum it is extremely well done, relatively complete and has a known history. Great project for someone and it will be neat to see it done.

  22. I personally don't see it as that ugly. It is a good specimin of a '50s show car although we will never want to adm,it it because it isn't what most of us would build for ourselves.

I'm going to guess that it doesn't look as out of proportion with the roof removed and that's probably what I would change if I were building one for myself and had to hit the '50s show car mark. But it wouldn't even be a consideration if this were the car that landed in my possesion. I would just bite the bullet and put it back the way it was.

  23. I helped the original builder's widow get this car ready for transport, but had NO idea it was going on e-bay!!!

As I told "Unclescoob" before he purchased it, this kustom restoration project is not for the weak! It will take a lot more than dreams to finish it.

Do not bid on this car if you are not going to restore it!!!

If you want this forgotten beauty...You should at the very least know what you're getting yourself into!!!

Whomever buys this from "Unclescoob" should do as promised by restoring it to its original glory and keep the widow's memories of her husbund famous kustom build alive!!!

Well the Black Flame will live. I just bought it off of unclescoob and have plans to restore it. Ka-Zoo and Chaz are right. with a car like this only real Kustom guys would understand why one would take on such a basket case. We need to restore these early cars when ever possible. They are the begining of our hobby and you may not like the styling but it shows you they didn't do cookie cutter kustoms back then. and by every one trying some thing different me found some great styling ques that are still being used today. Can't wait to get this car home and start on it.

  25. Kool1,

Good luck on the restoration and glad to see you're keepin' history alive. I say that thing is damn cool, even though I'm a Hot Rod guy.

There was a full feature on the car and its builder in one of my Petersen books from the 50s (possibly the 57 Restyle that Barris edited) and if I am not mistaken it was featured in rough condition in a Goodguys magazine a few years ago. Personally I didnt care for the homemade Buick style sidetrim but you had to admire the work that went into it if not the car itself. To me it has historical significance but that's about it.

I understand...not everyone(me especially) has to have flat blak and red wheels on a "hot rod" that is stupidly lower than the tires...and be constantly reminded by "pseudo-traditionalists" that "tradition" built cars exactly like those ridiculously chopped sedans and coops you can't see out of...sorry, not back in my day.

Kustoms were a way to express yourself...NOT follow the leader. The so-called "hot rod" guys of today will never understand...
