I have a 1963 Mercury Monterey that has some surface rust. It looks easy to remove but wanted to some real advice on the best way to remove and then treat so it does not return. THANKS!
There are alot of phosphoric acid based products out there that will remove surface rust and treat the steel, such as Ospho, Rustmort, and Metal Ready (POR-15 product). There many others and the strength between them varies so sometimes you will have to Scotch Brite the effected area depending on the the product and the degree of surface rust you are dealing with. I like Ospho as it is low odor, ready to use, cheap, and available at most autobody or hardware stores. If you consider any of these products it is not recommended to cover the steel in self etching primer as the acids may interact negatively. Make sure you use a respirator if you are in doors and you don't want it on your skin.
Thats a good question, I usually sand it down and spray some kind of rust treatment on it. For little parts a vinegar bath for about 24 hrs and a little elbow grease works good.
