I have a 32 5w body...it was last touched before me in the 80,s...the patch work needs redone and it has ALOT of bondo on it...up to a 1/4 inch in some places...what is the best media to remove this type of build up...Gl*** bead ,plastic bead, soda, or sand...i know sand is hard on sheet metal and is prone to heat up and warping...thanks guys and gals...
I read about this product dupont makes called starblast on a posting earlier this year. I used it on a 31 A coupe. Great stuff. Really cuts rust/scale/bondo, and doesnt warp. The surface can be smoothed out nicely with some 220 on a D/A. 7 bucks a bag too. Here is a before and after. About two weeks ago.
Yes, I'd second StarBlast (not sure about the not warping part, though). I only use soda or StarBlast in my professional business. Contrary to popular belief, soda will cut body filler... but on thick stuff it is a slow and frustrating process. Soda will not cut rust simply because the rust is "in" the metal and soda does not remove metal material.
Warm the filler with a propane torch and s****e it off with a puddy knife before blasting if you want to save a few bucks on the blasting bill.
How many bags do you generally go through when blasting a body? I'm thinking about doing mine but I wanna know what it's gonna set me back first.
Plastic will remove bondo fairly quickly, but it won't touch rust. Sand is pretty much the only way to get into the rust "pits"... good luck!
I'm gonna have to agree with the Blast Off guy, soda or star blasting it will produce the best results.
WARNING: Things to NEVER blast!!! I learned the hard way. Rear end housings, carb throttle bodies, carb float bowls, engine blocks,Manual transmission housings, door latch mechanisims...ya just cant get the media out all the way afterwards....you are better off caustic solution dipping them...
i would use walnut shell to get paint and then go back over the rust with a real fine media like the star blast. i am a sand blaster i run a media blasting company here in wyoming dry ice works too but is expensive it dosent cut rust though
Dumb question... do the different types of materials require a different style media blaster? i would ***ume you just dump the material you are using into a regular media blaster.
As far as I know the guy that does mine uses a special pressure pot for baking soda. A different pot is used for the star blast sand. Its a mobile unit on a trailer with a 185 compressor. ROB
What ever you chose... Make sure to put some kind of primer on it right away... I didn't and it ****ed to sand all the suface rust... I had mine sandblasted.. but the guy who did it was into cars so he knew how not to warp panels...
