Think I learned my lesson

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oddrodgarage, Apr 4, 2007.

  1. I have been selling off my stash of cars to help pay some medical bills from when my daughter, Gianna, was bit by a rattlesnake. In the process of doing so I have learned a valuable lesson...never take a guy on his word over the phone that "Dude consider it sold...I mean it man...from one car guy to another...I want it, need it, gotta have it, I mean guaranteed sold!!"

This chucklehead who made the statement above about a 56 dodge truck that I have available (for a mere 799) shows up today after I told 8 or 9 guys that it's sold is with his buddy who apparently the truck was for and said...man the pictures are deceiving I thought the paint was better and I didn't think the work on the front clip was as rough as you said it was (emphasis on I already told him that part of the truck was a throwaway/redo)...tell ya what man I'll give ya 500 for the cab...now I know I need the money for the bills but screw this asshole for wasting my time, for telling other guys that it was sold, and for letting me believe him/his buddy in the first place...so after I told these two guys...we'll call em Neil and Bob (cause I think that's what they do) that they had 2 minutes to get their trailer off my property the one bonehead goes hey ya mind if I check out your 36 ford...and I said you mind if kick your ass and by the way you got a minute thirty to get outta here! They apparently got the point and left with their tails between their legs or between each other's legs...

I guess I should be grateful to Neil and Bob 'cause I will never consider anything sold until I see the green...

  2. I can relate to your med bill pain, I am now the proud owner of a $6k wheelchair. Best of luck.

I've been trying to get rid of free furniture, and so far I'm on #6 taker:rolleyes:

  3. I always tell anyone that calls about a car that the first person to show up with CASH money gets it.

I've had knuckleheads try to negotiate a price over the phone without even seeing the vehicle. I told one guy that offered $200 4 times on an $800 asking price "Sure, I'll take it." and then told him I changed my mind when he showed up. He wasn't happy but I told him no 3 times.

Money talks and you know the rest.

That is a bummer. Thank you for sharing so we can all learn. Good luck on the next call you get about the truck.

'Money talks, bullshit walks' is a good motto when you're doing business. If somebody calls me from out of town with the "hold it for me" B.S., I tell them to Next Day Air a check for the down payment or else it goes to the first one that shows up with the money.

In God We Trust....all others pay CASH.

Seems we ALL get to learn these "Money Lessons" sooner or later - too often it seems there are no bounds.

i hold things for poeple too. but i get the numbers of everyone else that calls in case someone flakes, sorry for your daughter, hope eveything is fine

  10. Sorry you had to learn the hard way. We all did one way or the other over some deal. I was recently offered 10 cents on the dollar for my A Fuel Coupe re-creation that I only just finished. The guy heard that I was in the hospital, no insurance and had a $13,000 dollar bill to pay. This was true, but I can handle it. I told the guy these exact words:

You show up at my house at any time for any reason and I'll have my best buddies (my two dogs) bite the living shit out of you. Then I'll have very best friend, my wife, stomp a mud hole in your ass. And then I'll kick you ass....comprenedy asshole?

    He hung up

Ask for a "good faith $XXX to "hold it" which is good for, say, 15 days and of course is non refundable. If they back out then it solves the problem before it got started. Take the name and number of others that call too.

  12. hope your daughter is doing well. No phone buyers, no checks, money orders, or any other make-believe form of payment. Cash in full at time of sale. Guy wants you to hold it, get 3/4 down (in cash) non-refundable. Hold it for one day. This style of transaction may be a little one-sided, but I have yet to be screwed, or strung along. For every asshole that walks, there will be that one golden buyer. Oh, and stay away from family and friends, they'll fuck you too.

  14. Ive sold a couple of things and had no problems. Ive purchased a ton of stuff from old timers to newbies and have had no problems with any of my purchases.

Only problems Ive had have been my own. Sometimes trying to figure out the logistics of getting big stuff from there to here can make it real tuff. In every case though Ive made it very clear to the seller not to hold stuff for me while Im trying to work shit out. I believe in the whoever shows with the money first gets the goods.

I have had to back out of a couple of deals and it made me feel pretty crappy. But going in straight hopefully made it a bit easier on the sellers the two times I had to do this.

This place is supposed to be a bunch of semi like minded enthusiasts. An automotive brotherhood of sorts. I dont understand how any one of us can screw another one over here.

Whenever I sell shit and people are calling/emailing me about it, I tell them the first person to put cash in my hand gets it.

I once sold a 700R4 to a guy, and a day later had some other kid who had called a few days earlier drive like 100 miles in a borrowed car to "pick it up". I felt real sorry for the dude, but shit man - I told you over the phone that it was first come first serve. You could have at least called before the drive down to double-check.

I think he learned his lesson, too.

Cash, dead presidents, bread, $$$ or whatever you want to call it in my hand NOW is the only language that I understand when selling something . I sold used cars in the '80s and made the mistake of holding cars until "tomorrow, when I get paid or whatever". But I learned. Since you can't pass money to me by phone line , the first who puts the money in my hand will own the prize.

I can't imagine doing something like that. When I commit to making the purchase, whether it be from ebay or a phone conversation, I keep my word regardless of the situiation even if my circumstances or needs change.

I've showed up before and the item may not have been exactly as I thought but was indeed true to the description and photos that the seller provided. I was the one that took the chance and made the commitment before seeing the item in person so I always follow through with the purchase. I guess that's just how my parents raised me.

Oddrodgarage, I hope your daughter is doing well. It must have been a scary time for your family.
