After months of waiting, my quick change showed up!! :D

The rear was built by Hot Rod Works. I sent them the bells they sent me back a rear with the bells modified for 31 spline, big bearing Ford, pull-out axles. The center section is a Winters V8 unit with their new diff. system. The order took a little while because there was some issues on Winter's end, but HRW came through with a quality product in the end. Nick from HRW is a HAMBer and maybe he'll chime in. Anyway, happy it showed up and can't wait to stick it out back of the Murray!

Now that the drooling has subsided a bit and I have a couple boxes of parts to deal with to put this together, I have a couple questions maybe someone can clarify for me. I bought the 31-spline BB ford axles like I mentioned above, also the 9-inch Ford rear brake drums complete and ready to go. My question is about ***embling this. I have a 9-inch rear on my coupe, but have never pulled the axles on it. When I ***emble this, do I need to take it to a shop to have the bearings pressed in? What else do I need to know about ***embling the axles into the diff? Any tips or recommendations? Never ***embled one and I don't want to screw it up right out of the gate!

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks!
    Scooter

I think the bearings press onto the axle shafts, not into the housing.

Excellent! They're on there then. As they sit in the box right now, the bearings are indeed mounted up on the axle. Didn't check to see if they were pressed or slip fit though.

***uming this is right (bearings pressed to axles), hold my hand and give me the 101 on ***embly. Do the splines need lube or are they fine with the bath they'll get from the diff/case?

No paperwork. Only a t-shirt in the envelope and a receipt in the sticky shipping sleeve. No instructions that I can see.

  9. Damn, that's nice. With the 31 spline 9" stuff, how much HP can it handle? What kind of brakes can be used? How big of a bank account dent?

Stock 48 Ford width brake face to brake face. 61-inches. Add an inch for my wide-5 adapters.

I believe the number was around 440 HP. I'll have to look again. Might have been more even. It's more than enough for what I've got going on.

It was worth EVERY penny! Seriously, don't ask! Larry is in the ballpark. Let's just say, I had to sell some stuff to get it and I'm going to be recovering for awhile, but since it's going to be a focal point of the rear of the car (completely exposed!) nothing else seemed to fit the bill of the build and seemed correct. Not sure how the 9" Ford drums are going to look on there, but maybe I'll adapt something else later down the road that will look a little better or maybe just get the 11" finned drums to replace the stock Ford drums that came with it.

  12. Stick it in there tonight and we'll see you at the Roundup. No excuses!

Scooter. Knock the seals in, set the backing plates in place and carefully slide the axles past the seals until they engage the splines. It may take a few whacks on a block of wood to bury the bearing. Install the T-bolts from the backside, put bearing retainers in place and tighten. Done. Nick.

Scooter. Read the tag on the yoke. That explains fill level and oil. FWIW, Winters rates the differential at 900 hp and the rear end at 500 hp. Nick

You prolly know this but when I went to ***emble my quickie I found out that the axles are different lengths in a new ford rear and they need to be the same length on the quickie. So I had to go back to the yard and get two right side axles.

    Yep! Everything is centered.

Nick! Thanks! Time to take this thing out of the crate and start looking a little closer at it. I appreciate it!

When I finally get to put this thing together I'll post pics.

that look great , those wide five adapters are 3/4 steel plate and heavy as hell from speed way . and are ugly as hell just a warning , there`s got to be a way to cut up and join old to new drums ?

They're 1/2" thick adapters and the bolt heads hit EVERYTHING and yes, they are UGGGGLLLYYY!! However.... I have a solution for that. I'm using the wide five drum centers as covers for the adapters. They'll get sandwiched between the wheel and adapter. You'll never know there is an adapter there until the wheel is off. I'll try and get some pictures. I'm not a big fan of puting non-functional things on this car, but the adapters were just too ugly, so something had to be done. Also, I'm going to switch the 5/8 bolts to studs so I don't have to space the adapter. The rear is already 62-1/2 inches from adapter cover to adapter cover. The tires will just clear the body. I don't want it any wider.

That is one realy sweat hook up you have there Scooter.
Hey, have you given any thought into getting those rims anodized?
It will keep them from ever getting rusted and falling apart on you down the road. An I do remember an article in one of the rod rags about fixing old rims with new stuff. And the "wheelkid" on OSR forum, his family runs a wheel shop, they had a blip on the forum about modifying rims and center sections. Worth the time to shoot him a pm and get some pointers, or just ship those out with the instructions on what you need done.
Anyhow, must be nice to have a custom built quicky......lol......droool

o 1/2 inch sorry , at least transfer punch to aluminum and use 1/2 counter sunk allen bolts , instead of the 5/8 train bolts they come with what the hell ? if you could find someone that has a pair , borrow one , copy and refine it ! good luck

    LordMaximo,
The wheels will get powdercoated in the long run. Just painted for now. I don't think I will need to modify the wheels. If I do, i will have them widened to the outside a touch for the tire, but I will probably leave them stock. I like the look of the wide fives a lot. So they will stay wide fives.

Just going to pull those big *** 5/8 bolts out of there and either press in a 1/2 inch lug studd or get a 5/8" threaded lug stud and just screw them on. The wheels fit right over those 5/8 bolts with no problem, so I'm thinking that 5/8 thread-in studs are the answer... if anyone makes them that is.
