I have a 78 440 out of a truck and the oil filter faces forward. I am putting it in a 54 Dodge and it is hitting the front cross member. Is there a way to reverse it so it points backwards and I can put a relocation kit on it?? Below is an example of Wayfarers block in a different car. But the same orientation.
You know, you probably could spin it around if you could figure out a way to mount it. As I reacall, it's driven by a shaft that comes into the middle of it, so that should be ok. Take it off, look at the way it mounts and the way oil flows into and out of it and see if it will work.
Depending on what shaft you've got, you can spin the pump around. Only problem is finding space for the new mounting holes.... as I recall the mounting area on those pumps is fairly limited.
That was my first inclination (to spin it), but I haven't looked that closely. I have a couple messages out on Mopar boards as well.
How about fabbing a remote adapter? It might not be too difficult to create something unusual yourself. I'm not sure, but you may be able to buy one from one of the Mopar race guys like Mancini or possibly directly from Mopar performance.
unless the oil filter adapter is gonna hit something I'd just hang a remote oil filter on it. They're not expensive and then you can put your filter wherever you want. I'm a little tied up right now but in the morning I'll go take a look at mine and see if the pump can be clocked.
I guess I'm not clear. It does hit the frame as it sits now. Even if I get it back a couple inches I think it still will. Hmmmm. I'll have to think some more on this one.
Here's the problem with the remote filter; that whole unit hangin' out IS the oil pump. You'd need a whole pumping and filter system. Why don't you just hack the crossmember? Or try grinding on the oil pump itself for a little clearance? What is actually touching what?
You could probably go with a dry sump system or just clearence the crossmember. I never heard of spining the housing around, does it work? later plmczy
I wasn't sure if it could be spun around so I figured I would ask. I will end up recessing the firewall and then cutting the crossmember and using a shorter oil filter. Wayfarer, what was the number on that short filter?
I'll probably not be able to get it for you until monday. I'm heading out for the swap meet in Portland and won't be back until Sunday afternoon. I'll get it for you then. It's not shorter, just not as big around and I do know it's from an 80's ford pickup.
so-cheap Sorry I didn't get back. I got tied up this morning and didn't see the note on my desk until just now. Then I saw your post and remembered. I now have the new pump for my B/RB in my hand (a 75 truck but it doesn't matter). No the pump can't be clocked. If its just the filter that's hitting then wayfarer's solution is probably as good as any. Otherwise you're gonna have to clearence something.
