I am looking for radial tires that look similar to bias ply tires. the reason for this is beacuse I want the best handling and performance possable for my car, along with good tread life.

    thanks!

  2. No. Get bias-ply and get used to it.

Hot rods and good handling is a oxy*****....................

Gotta say, I had to break down and buy some cheap radials for my truck to replace my Sears brand bias; now I miss the way they handled. Can't wait to get another set of Bias.

You can get wide-whitewall radials at an exorbitant price, but that's really as far as the resemblance goes. They have a modern radial tread, and from closer than 20 feet they really don't look the same, even from the side.

The true bias-ply look, as far as I know, is really only available on the real deal. Nobody bothers with putting the old tread on a modern tire. But if you ask me, the old-time tread is really the icing on the cake of a cool wheel & tire combo.

  5. Don't forget Hurst Racing Tires. They recap radial casings with the old cheater pattern and they got a new front one as well. Just thought I'd mention it as I was looking at their website earlier tonight. Later Jaysin

    so true,
nothing looks better than true bias ply tires.
i have radials on my 55, but i'd rather have a set of bias plys on it, just for the look that they have.

Try looking up Michelin PiloteX 600WR16 or Michelin XCA 650R16 and 550HR MichelinX.
These ( the X) are traditional tires, been made since the 40s and are speed rated to 130mph. They are radial construction with cross ply markings and tread .
Michelin also is now remaking the Englebert tires which are 150mph rated.

Can't remember who it was, but someone wrote in here about spotting some sweet bias looking radials at Lucas Cl***ic Tires in Long Beach, CA. Check out the Goodyear Cl***ic Radials on their website. Cool diamond pattern on white sidewall. www.lucascl***ictires.com Not quite look alikes, but nice. I run Bias Ply's.

Still can't believe nobody offers a radial with the old style straight tread patterns from old bias plys. There is a market opportunity for somebody. All the radial wide whites I've seen look like somebody revamped the mold used to make BFG radial T/As in the 1990s

  10. Not a bias, but few could tell once the car is rolling.

Parked, another story, but they're tall and narrow so they work for me.

Look for radials in the 75 and 80 series of tires.

I've seen the new Coker radial and they look good to me.

  12. I've seen some light truck tires that looked nice and square at the edges. Looked like they'd be good on the back of a modified.

For what it's worth, I just put a set of Coker Blackwall Radials-look-like-biasply on my roadster. They look almost exactly like the bias plys I replaced but after a drive yesterday.....no comparison.

Unless you knew it goin in, I don't think anyone would suspect they are radials without actually reading the 700r15 on the sidewall. Sorry, no pics.

I was at the Street Rod Nats in Louisville last summer and was talking to the Coker guys and they have some Excelsior brand radials that look like bias plys. They are a little pricey, but they have the right look. They are available in 15" and 16", bigs and littles. I checked their website but couldn't find the exact tire I was looking for. May have to talk to them on the phone.

Just to reiterate what 97 says here, these Michelins radials ARE traditional period correct. If you really want radials, I think this is the best (but not the only) way to go. These tires have been made since the 40's and were available in the US (but were very hard to get and expensive until Sears starting selling them in 1965). You wouldn't have expected to see these on a roach rod, but you could have seen them on a high-end well built rod or custom.

  17. They're an inexpensive foreign made radial that were purchased for roll-arounds, but I'll run them for a while.

The fronts are Akuret, not sure what the rears are since both rear tires are sitting in drive-up ramps and the brand name is hidden by the cupped sides of the ramps.

    Rear:
    P235/75R-15
    6" tread width
    28" tall
    6" x 15" wheel

Here's a pic of the rear tire.

we had michelin X radials on the family car in the 60s...it was a Citroen :)

They are far from traditional for hot rods, though

  20. BFGoodrich commercial t/a's dont look half bad. There heavy and you need to air them down alot. I have a set of 215/85/r16, they have a tall sidewall and narrow tread.

I agree. They definitely would have been the unusual exception to the rule, but they were available at the time and are "traditional period" correct.

recently i saw a pair of what i thought were bias plys but in actuality they were radials. they had the side profile of a bias ply but on top they were radial. awesome looking tires. they were on a roadster from albuquerque. they were crazy expensive though. i think the guy said he paid almost $400 per tire. but they definately looked period correct. i can't remember where he said he got them from though.

I had some cheap-*** Kelly Springfields 10 years ago that had a squared-off tread shoulder like a bias-ply, and they were pretty tall, too. Try the low-end tire dealers who sell oddball brands and models.

    Coker 16" blackwall radial: $190.00

    Same thing with WWW: $195.00

They're sold in the bias ply sizes only replace what would normally be a dash with an "R." 600-16 bias ply becomes 600R16 radial.

I haven't seen them in person, but they look good in the picture. Not as ***y as a piecrust Firestone, but ***ier than a lot of real bias plies.

Just a caveat, though, tall-narrow tires, whether radial or bias ply, are gonna feel "wiggly." That's just a function of the sidewall flexing.

Go to the Diamondback Cl***ics website. They have one line of tire that is a radial but is an absolute dead ringer for Bias-Ply. It comes in one size only,
15'. and one size only 16".

with all these fake bias ply tires nowadays, we're gonna go around looking to see if the second rib in is worn more than the rest....which would show it's a real bias ply tire....remember?

Those look pretty good! But do they have the "radial pooge" at the bottom when inflated properly, and with the weight of a car on them?
