I run an old style speedometer and want to add an aftermarket cruise control. Most cruise controls marketed now use a VSS (a hall effect sender) screwed into the trans. I seem to remember that there were some chevys, maybe Camaros, in the 80's that used a VSS in line with the old style cable. Basically it was an adapter mounted to the trans that allowed the cable to mount to it. Anyone know what cars used these?

It would be helpfull to know what type of signal the cruise control needs.

Sine Wave , square wave ?? They are not interchangeable. I seem to remember the early cruise controls used a sine wave signal with little magnets on the drive shaft

How many pulses per mile or drive shaft rotation will the cruise control need?

    http://www.jagsthatrun.com

has many different pulse generators for speed-O applications

The trans is a '68 Chevy TH400. I'm looking at cruise controls listed in JC Whitney. They don't list the various wave types. They just ask what car you want to use it on. I suspect that they have some prevision for use with the different signals.
I would like to find a VSS generator that I could score in a junkyard. Something that would go right on the TH400. I'd like to avoid using magnets on the driveshaft as I've heard that they fly off and make the driveshaft hard to balance if they do stay on.
If I could come up with a VSS I might be able to adapt the cruise from a late model GM car. I already have one of those "in stock".

the t-400 came with different signal generators.

the VSS that functions with a metal disc on the output shaft uses 40 pulses per shaft rotation and is a square wave signal. The disc ( reluctor) is metal , looks like little grooves all around the disc. this developes the 40 pulses per rotation to the pick up sensor

The others are all sine wave, mostly 4 pulse per rotation of the output shaft.... these are gear driven off the output shaft with a regular speed-O type gear on the output shaft.

    good luck

    Hey, Ed, remember me???

I have a Hall-effects sender which Cyberdyne sells for use with their electronic speedometers. ... I believe this is what you are looking for, as it mounts to the existing cable drive, and allows your existing cable to attach to the Hall-effects sender. ....It is Cyberdyne #8901, and I think they are $25-$30 new.

I have no idea of the number or type of pulses this sender outputs, but if you want to borrow it for experimentation, you know where it is!

I can't help with an OEM application, but if you need to visit some junkyards, I may be able to fit that into my schedule!

    Me again, Ed! [IMG]

I just looked at a NAPA catalog I have, and it looks like NAPA # VSS315 Vehicle Speed Sensor is the same as the unit Cyberdyne sells. .....It's application shows as 1992-95 Mercury, and carries FOMOCO # E8BZ 9E731 A.

I see one GM application that appears to be an inline VSS, but the pic is not clear. .....GM# 10456131, NAPA #VSS231, and is listed for 1991-93 Chevrolet.

Another pic not clear, but it appears to be an inline VSS, NAPA # VSS232, GM #25517212, GM #25526374, listed for 1984-87 Buick.

    An NAPA stores near you?

If you want to look at the catalog or sender, you know where I am!
