Spent the biggest part of today fabbing up my rear door and supports, so I guess I can officially call it a delivery now. I used 1x1 tubing for the inner structure and formed it to the body before I ever cut the door shape out, helped hold the proper body curveature. I then cut it out, then in the same manner I fabbed the inner body structure and supports. I then tack welded in my universal hinges to the body and fit the door several times then tacked the hinges to the door. That is where I pretty much left off as I noticed that the upper pass area of the body where I welded in my inner supports pulled in about 3/8 of an inch, I guess from the weld heat so I need to make several relief cuts and get it back to shape. I have a lot more fitting and gapping to do, then I'll have to bolt my hinges in, then cut the tacks to allow for more adjustment. but all in all for my first time and doing a bunch of guess work, it seems to fit pretty well for now. I also have to build a flange around the body opening for a seal, and install my latch and striker. That will be a good project for next sat. Oh, I also put on my 4" carb spacers and new Barry Grant Blower carbs, just to see how it will look. Later, Rusty.
Dude...I don't know about those carb spacers... Are you going to be able to see the tree at the Drags?? Raer door looks killer. -Abone.
Thanks Ed, thats something I want to do so I appreciate the post. Is there another thread with build details. Looking good mate.
Much of the engine is for that cartoon look, believe it or not, I actually want to get the scoop up another inch or two. Yeah I'm fairly happy with the raer door, a rear door would look better but a raer door has that certain elligant look to it. I'm going to get a dash prisom for the tree at the drags, I might be a bit slow though by the time it reflects where I can see it though. Later, Rusty.
Fenders are most definately stayin, and are stayin how you see them, I'm having the frame powder coated chrome along with all the suspension etc, then polished aluminum louvered interior panels ( with dynamat of course) and the body will remain pretty much how you see it. Thanks for the comments guys. later, Rusty.
I've got a soft spot for deliveries. My first rod project was a '29 back when I was in high school. My original rear door was just stamped sheet metal with a wood frame, pretty flimsy.
