Hey Ya'll, I LOVE my ole 57 GMC truck. It has alot of dents, scratches, s****s, been shot at as the Bullet holes are still there, and had a Hatchet slammed in the side of it, and of course.... RUST. I know that I am kinda weird, but I don't want to change anything about it. But in reality, I know that sometime I will have to address the rust that it has on it. It is real and to me very cool has it has a lot of character along with it. My freind told me to just get a couple maybe more since I have so much Rust and just spray it on all over the truck. He said that it would stop the Rust at least for awhile. Has anyone done this before? I believe it would work I guess for a while until it rains here again. Any suggestions for a quick fix besides junking it for a guy with a limited budget would be appreciated.
I use it on my frame every few weeks, but I still have rust popping up. It has too many solvents and it evaporates. Try something heavier if you want it to last. Remember that it will attract dust like crazy. My prettynew frame is all grimy after a year in the garage. Squirrel is right. It will be a ***** to clean off when paint time comes.
You will be sorry if you spray WD40 on your truck. Fisheye city That is a term that is used if you know anything about body and paint work
You can get and acid wash to nuetralize the rust and stop it from growing - Lowe's has it in the paint dept.
Sprayed it on the chrome-reverse wheels that came with my '54 Ford while it was sitting outside...they kept flash rusting or something...oh and the fenders..I think it actually helped.
WD-40 will attract water and cause more rust. It's o.k. to use for a very short time, but long term it's not what you want. I'd use one of the LPS products. I had a brand new Bridgeport back in the early 80s. After it was delivered, I didn't plan to use it for several weeks, so I sprayed the table down heavily with WD-40. After about three weeks, it was covered with rust. Remember, rust never sleeps...
I havn't used it on any of my cars but I have an old *** Snap On rolling toolbox that my granfather handed down (I love that thing), it started rusting on my porch. I tried the WD-40 and i think it helped but like was mentioned earlier, it attracts dust like crazy and the bright red paint turned more of a blood-red. Kinda cool but not what I was hoping for. I think you'd be bummed if you srayed it on your ride, it would look wet all the time, until it looked really dusty. Then you'd have to wash off the dust, and create more rust... I wouldn't do it.
Like was mentioned, wd-40 evaporates and doesn't really prevent rust anyway. Looks like you truck is pretty rusty already, doesn't seem to me that anything is gonna make a difference. As long as moisture and oxygen can get to it, it will continue to oxidize. Rust promotes more rust, thats why people call it cancer! I think your truck looks kick *** the way it is just like you do, but the trade off is that it's slowly being eaten up. I say leave it how it is, don't spray anything on it, it will ruin the look. You can always weld up steel and re-paint later on down the road... my $.02.
I am pretty new to this scene and learning everyday. But, would it be better to spray some kind of clear coat paint on the bare metal? Cheap rattle can stuff or high buck PPG, Sikkens etc etc.
I think If a customer came to me with a truck that had been sprayed with wd40 I ould charge him an extra 1000 bucks on the paint job... silicone molecules are PERFECTLY round that is why you get fisheyes.. the paint CANT moleculerly stick to it...
Does it change the color of the rust to black or? Is there anything comparable to gibbs that you can buy off the shelf at a store/autoparts or?
Sadly wd-40 works as good as pepto bismol. I still puke after the pepto and it will still rust after the wd-40.
a old friend showed me a trick , he would put half a cup of keroseen in the wash bucket , it stoped the rust streaks that would come from under the crome trim . it gets in all the places you cant and leaves a oil film. dont use wd 40 .
Crowerglide is right. It attracts moisture.I sprayed a newly ground crank with the stuff and then wrapped it up in plastic. Two weeks later I opened it up and it was covered in rust. The machinist told me WD40 should never be put on naked metal as it attracts moisture.
