You know what is bad about this entire 'internet shorthand' or 'text/IM shorthand' **** is that it becomes the defining reason that schools are moving away from phonics learning and into the whole word aquisition of language. I know, I know, this doesn't have much to do with the entire issue, but it does make a difference in how today's kids are thinking and learning.

What is truly bad is that I've seen college students turn in papers containing this type of shorthand and the ebonics language that was tried so hard to be p***ed into recognition several years ago. The idea behind recognizing it as a language was so that companys could create and market a translator for it!

I agree though, about the declining intelligence and the overall removal of 'thought' from kids of today. Automated customer service where you talk to no humans, pictures instead of words for the illiterate or non-English speaking, and various other issues of the like.

The only thing I can hope for is that Darwin gets to'em before the rest of us do!

Sorry for the ***** session. End of rant.

Also, forgot to add... the spell checker is only as good as the idiot who programmed it. The major problem with it is that you can 'teach' it words, and if someone has taught it the incorrect spelling of a word, then it can't catch the error.

Computers are only as smart as the people who are operating them, and I work around many stupid computers.

on the "quick" reply box look at the top right corner, make sure your gl***es are on and look or take the mouse pointer and scroll across the 3 symbols, far right is switch editor mode, next going left is increase or decrease size option then check spelling (in upper right corner). keep us posted on your results. hope this helps. :D

Threads like this need to be archived so that I can come back to them when I need a good belly laugh.

  21. I must say I also have a healthy hatred for the 'Internet & text lingo'. Hold it against me if you will, I studied English Literature while I was studying Paramedical Science and find that I lament the decline of the Queens language.
Another point about the spell check, as pointed out by VirgilHilts, the American dialect requires a different spelling than traditional or 'accepted' English. The reason for this it the inflection used to enunciate certain words differs from country to country. Hence the spell check singling out words such as colour (Correct spelling) and color (Localised US spelling)
Even Localised is picked up with the spelling as LocaliZed!!
I agree the younger generations (I'm only 34) have become so lazy that spelling is too hard a task now.
The end is Nigh! It begins with spelling and grammar and ends in the apocalypse.
