What's the furthest you ever went to get a car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Shane T., Apr 9, 2007.

  1. Edmonton, Alberta to Boise, Idaho via Richland Washington - 2150 miles roundtrip by myself in 4 days. Sold a '27 T touring front 1/2, picked up some wheels (Thanks Tracy!), hit a Harbor Freight for some cheap tools and snagged a $1500 eBay bargain ex-racecar roller comprised of a set of old Stude rails, early Ford front axle with split bones and hubs/spindles, 'glass '27 roadster body and a very early Halibrand Culver City V8 q/c. Value of the rearend alone more than paid for the whole trip. Turns out a similar q/c just sold on eBay for just shy of 5 grand!

  2. Bought it over the phone after seeing the car a year and a half before, I got flight from Los Angeles CA. to Portland OR. Picked the car up the next day in Lake Oswego, OR. in a terrible rain storm. I ended up driving it the 900 miles home to Los Angeles after doing a bunch of work on it locally in Corvallis OR. at a friend's house.

One hell of a road trip thanks to the weather and the dis-repair of the new "GEM", and I would do it again in a second.

  4. About 450 each way. VA to SC to get my first '57 chevy. My dad would always kid me by saying my car had more miles (towed) behind his plymouth than I put on it driving under it's own power.

I only wish I was that smart once in my younger days. I'm of the mindset nowdays that it's OK to come home empty handed. It's better to cut your losses with mileage at times.

  13. 2 days. 2000 kilometres. 3 hours sleep. A borrowed ute. A borrowed trailer. A borrowed fuel card.

End result: a 1934 Cadillac....and it's not even mine. Was fun though.

Oh, and we jammed 2 windsors and 4 gearboxes in the back of the ute too.

Concord, NC to Chicago, IL for a good running poly 318, pushbutton trans, 8 3/4 rear. There and back only stopping long enough to load the goods in the truck I rented (stated local only to have unlimited mileage) and grab a bite to eat.

How about the furtherst you went and didn't get a car? Been looking for a nice '32 5-window for about a year now and so far I've been to Austin TX, Atlanta GA, Toledo OH, Portland OR and Cleveland OH. Still don't have one!

Flew from Dallas to Austin to pick up the car that "could be driven anywhere" to buy it and drive back to Dallas. I paid the seller and made it approximately 2 miles before it broke down. Had it towed to a shop, hitched a ride to the airport, flew back to Dallas.

Two months later, I was finally able to get her home.

    Now that's funny.

  25. About 5 years ago i was looking for a steel 41 Willys coupe. A friend was at the U.S. Nationals in Indy and spotted one for sale in a guys yard near the dragstrip. It was a project, but, it was there. I DROVE 2050 miles each way to look at it!! 4100 miles round trip, and did NOT buy it because it just needed everything.

  26. April last year, a buddy and I left Phila, Pa on Fri night to Orlando Fla. to pick up a 55 Chev, Drove straight thru and back, to about South Carolina, (about 1600 miles). Stopped at rest area to sleep, him in the back of the pick up, me in the 55 with no windows or seats, on the floor. Worst part was didn't have time to stop at Maxton, they were running speed trials at the mile. Damn!

Let's see Groucho, you told me you bought that Willys and took it to CA and it was too rough for you. You kept the wheels for your yellow glass coupe and you sold it to the brothers that run the MM Willys coupe who sold it to me. All of you left out the fact that it looked like it had been hit by a train in the left rear under all that bondo. Bring back memories now?? Thanks I really appreciated that...

Oh yeah I still have it!

Back in '68 I bought a '60 MGA out of a BARN at a FARM on Hawthorne Blvd in Torrance, CA.
I think there's a Shopping Maul where the farm usta be now.
That was about 16 or 17 miles from home.
That's about the farthest I guess.
Car was 8 years old and had 8 different colors/coats of paint on it.
    Cost me $200.
