i know i know....its been covered, i tried searching with a little luck...but wanted some personal answers...

i've been looking for parts to go open driveline on my '53 chevy 210.
found a guy who has an '82 T/A he's parting out.
he's offered to sell me the rear end and 4 speed.

so far the info i've found is that the rear end is about 62" wide....and what else i've gathered is that it will be a tight fit but it will go underneath the 'ol bomb. is that worth it?

my other question is, i don't think the guy knows what he has....meaning all he knows is that the its out of a '82 T/A.
I need some info on the rear end....what possible gear ratios, posi? stuff like that.

i dont' know how to tell the guy what to look for as far as finding that info out.

but anyways....any advice/help would be appreciated.
    thanks.

I don't know about IDing a rear end, but at home I have saved a link to a list of "good" rears for these cars. I'll PM it when I get home tonight.

Ideally, you want a 60" wide rear. But an inch on either side could be made up for with a different offset/backspace wheel. These cars had some pretty decent clearance to the outer fender. You may not be able to run skirts tho'

yea, i was told that i'd have to "trim" if i wanted to run with skirts...or i could just run without....
i dunno, maybe i'd be better off finding an s-10 rear or something like that....i love skirts.....

    I know the 4x4 S10's fit--I think they're 58" or 59". If Aaron's the chevy guru's around, he's got a lot of this stuff memorized, I think.

  8. Yep...for the S10, the 4x4 is the one you want. We put one in a '50 fleetline and it fit great. The '79 Camaro rear in my car required me to trim my skirts about 1/4" off the inside lip which is no big deal, but wheel and tire size will 'cause this to vary a bit.

Everyone talks about tri-5 Chevy rears, 1st and 2nd gen Camaro rears, and S10s rears for these cars (which all work great), but there are a lot of other options that may be easier to find. I like this chart...from Aaron's site.

thanks man. yea, i love Aaron's site, i've been all over that thing, its got tons of helpful ****!

my biggest thing now is knowing how to "ID" a rear end....?

  10. I don't know much about those rears, but if you have the casting #off that one, you could probably get some help decoding it from Squirrel or someone else here. You can also check this site out for general info on those cars: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/transmissions-drivetrain/

the 82 up rear is to wide and no telling what the ratio might be . the 70-81 rear is a good choice with a consertive wheel/tire. the GM metric rear 78-84 intermediate will give more wheel and tire room. the wheel and tire combo should dictate the rear choice not the other way around.
