  3. Sure. Try taking it up to a parts house that has an old-timer working there and actually knows something besides what's "in the computer".

    Edit:Or call the guy above!

it's just a standard bearing and seal. check the numbers and nit the local bearing house. be sure and support pump in the press so casting doesn't break. take your time!

I am looking into rebuiding my water pump for my 55 cadillac 331 as well, I have already found the rebuild kit, but it looks like I need some kind of special tool. The Shop Manual lists it as a Water Pump Impeller Tool. Check out the pic below. Is is possible to get this tool anymore? I have done some searching on the net and really only came up with what looks like marine applications.

By the way there is some crusty deposits along the walls of the water pump, is there any way to clean this thing? Can it be dipped like my block was?

Of course I have to ask the question, am I stupid for trying to use the original pump and should I just purchase the "new" one off of the "auction site"?

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Sorry for hijackin the thread bodyman.

I rebuilt a 283 water pump with a kit from one of the tri-5 supply houses. I didn't want one with plugs and bushings in unnecessary holes. I don't know if the innards are the same. Mine had the Chevy casting # so I was sure the kit was correct. I did mine in a good sized vice.

If yours turns out to be a Chevy casting, you may be able to find a kit from a Chevy resto parts house for the appropriate year it was made. Many of them carry rebuild kits for the "numbers matching" crowd. If you #s weren't ground off for plating.:D

I'd pay more for a kit than a replacement just to say I did it myself. nuts huh? good luck

I found this thread in a search. I am looking for a rebuild kit for a gm aluminum water pump. e bay has kits for more than the cost of a new pump. I will dis***emble it and try to find bearings any input on seals?
    Thanks
    Terry
