We are getting ready to weld in our new rear fender well replacement panels on our 1928 Model A roadster. What is standard practice? Cut out the old ones so there is a **** joint? Or leave a small flange and do a lap joint??

Standard practice for years was a lap joint.

Strictly ****-joints for me - don't want to leave a water trap anywhere on the body...

Just did mine on the coupe a little bit ago. **** joint is what I did.

  6. **** joint ---now that migs are cheap. If you do get distortion, its easier to correct without the double layer from an overlapped weld.

if you didnt get it by now **** joint and dont forget to leave a gap the thickness of the metal your welding for *****in penetration.

  10. Here's a tip----if you are a good welder, do a **** weld, leave about 1/32" gap between the parent metal and the patch panel----and if you can get at it, do all your weld from the inside. That way, you will have very little grinding or clean up to do on the exposed surface.

I hate **** joints because I have some kind of template dyslexia or some nonsense like that (my replacement panels rarely come out exactly right...), but they're the way to go.

Like its been said already, when ya have some kinda space where moisture can gather, it DOES, and it will come back to haunt ya.

    I prefer **** welds.

You can get those clamps from HF for cheap now-a-days.
