Folks, can you please suggest a couple of good books I can buy on Flathead Ford V8s? There seem to be a lot on the market, and I'm not too sure where to start.

Also, can someone please id the engine numbers on my motor. They are: C81T 6049A. The numbers are on the bellhousing. From what I can gather, its an 85hp '38 model truck engine. And does the 'C' stand for Canada? What do the other numbers mean? The '6' might be a S or a 5, its quite hard to read.

    Thanks
    Steve

One of the best books to get your feet wet is Tex Smiths Flathead book. Great overview of the motor and good tech info as well. Great articles on Holley and Strombergs also. I've used it for a reference for years.

I have bought several books and have read them but I have learned the most from the flathead internet sites and right here.

Some good reading is over on the "Ford flathead 1932 to 1953" site.

Check out the Techno site link, Rumble Seat's tips, Ron Holleran's stuff. Ron also has a book that is supposed to be good but I have not got it yet.

Also do a search on here. Piles of stuff have been discussed, just dig it up.

Hey everyone, thanks for all your help re the books. I'll search them out and get ordering. Thanks again, much appreciated.

Re the engine number, the Flathead is at my folks place, a couple of hours north of where I live. It was in the '38 Deluxe my old man purchased in the late '70s, when I was a kid. I've been trying to get the engine numbers over the phone, and I'm thinking they gave me the number off one of the heads? The '6049A' sounds like a head number.

Only place I know where you can get numbers for identifying your engine (besides the ones on the bellhousing) is in the blocks top, on the surface where the intake manifold rest on.
