1960's style '54 Dodge hood scoop pics/ideas

  1. I was toying with the possibility of putting a hood scoop on this truck:

So you know where I'm heading with this project... I'll probably repaint it the stock color, a medium-light blue - several years from now - as finances permit. Might get some pinstriping after it gets painted. But it'll rock a lot of "patina" 'til then. Right now, I've got some stock steelies on it, and have some left over '46 and '47 Dodge pass. car hubcaps and some '54 NY'er wheel covers that I could run. I've toyed with the idea of maybe some pie crusts on the back.

Although I'm not doing a 'period correct' car here (tunnel ram, alternator, electronic ignition, electric water pump), I'd like everything outside to look like it was done in the first 10 years or so of the truck's life. So, basically '64-down mods.

Any ideas, and especially pictures, for vintage air grabbers out there?

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is not actually a hood scoop but a through-the-hood blower mechanical injector scoop like might have been on it if it went to the salt flats.

  3. Like the rounded cast ones common on top of Hilborn 2 ports? Hmmm. Yeah, that's a thought.

One thing I ran by my friend who did the headers is maybe running a '62-3 Plymouth Super Stock style scoop, which would mean I'd need to mount it to a pan under the carbs, and cut a hole thru the hood.

But he told me it'd be too wide. Waaaah. I've always kinda' wanted to put one of those scoops on something.

  4. I don't got any pics but if I can't make Wilbur's carb clear the hood on his old Stude I'm puttinga Ford treadrop in it. A lot of guys used to runa real simple scoop llooked kinda like a real small mailbox only tapered on the back. Cal Custom made a bolt on like what I'm thinkin' about.

The way your hood opens kind of limits your options unless you make it a lift off or one piece and hinge it.

I agree with Mr. Beaner, a simple thin gauge sheetmetal scoop would work, tapered at the back, or maybe something sorta like "Two Lane Blacktop" '55 Chevy. It'd be bad ass if you could still open the hood sides with the scoop.

The only scoop that I would put on the truck would be off of a '58 Ford car.

I'm presuming the hood scoops are for show? There was so much room above the motor in my 54, I couldn't imanigine needing any kind of scoop. If your after fresh air, run a tube sealed to the air cleaner to the front bottom corners of the grill inset, where the original heater duct was ran from. If your after scoops, I would think the 69 Super bee style would look OK. Then you could still open the hood sides. The older stuff was too wide, I think. Gene

Are you planning to weld the hood together into one piece before you put a scoop on it? Don't the hood sides open sideways on that thing?

I think three carb stacks sticking out of that middle hood strip would look sweet and keep the side opening hood.

The scoop on my '53 is from a '59 Thunderbird, and the opening is redone with some round rod instead of the potmetal and chrome insert that came in it. Doesn't show up that great in this picture but you get the idea.

  11. Two words, baby: Tunnel Ram. Seriously, there wasn't a lot of room for air filters under the hood; the Edelbrock "Lynx" knockoffs were all that would fit (and clear the firewall, too). I had originally thought I'd run velocity stacks w/ doubled up small dia. filters. DOH!
I'd thought of the grill-fed-ram-tubes too. One cool way to do it. But wanted to see what plays out as far as ideas on the scoop goes. And I think you're right about a lot of stuff being too wide.
Yup, the hood opens on the sides.
My thought was to cut holes thru the center to feed the carbs, and trim away the sides where they'd hit the scoop. Kinda' like in the left side of my sketch (you see why I don't submit anything for the Fri art show...)

BTW, Good looking Ford. Wish I still had my '52 Customline.
Hell, Benno, you oughta' know that my options are only limited by my madness... um... make that creativity.

Is that Cal Custom cast aluminum, with some ribs along the middle of the top? If so, I think a friend has one.

Now I gotta' go google images of '58 Fords and Thunder Hawks...

Since the hoods fold from the side and you really only have the center section to put a scoop on, I'm thinking one of those old finned aluminum Cal-Custom ones sticking out through a hole.

Some Mopar (RR?) had seperate scoops on each side of the hood, you could putthem on the folding parts insted of one small one in the mid section.

PULEEZ paint your trans cooler and put the grill back in. The scoop and hubcaps are premayure. I've put lipstick on a pig and it didn't help.

You all realize the original post was made in 2007?!? I suspect whatever was needed was done a long time ago. Gene
