Please point me in the direction of the running Model A coupes for $6K.

As for the original poster, I agree that we'd need a better description and/or pictures of the car and the price offered to judge if it's really an old guy who thinks his stuff is gold or a young guy who is out of touch with the actual prices of old cars.

Sellers can set prices, but the buyers ultimately determe them. keep stopping buy - you'll get your chance

    Profits?

How did it get to be worth more when you owned it?

I know what you are talking about. The pics below are from a property near my mom's farm in Alabama. Everytime I go home I drive there and try to contact someone. I have yet to get anywhere. This place has not changed for over 15 years now.

Must have insulted the old man with your offer. Sounds like time to keep looking elsewhere. I have run into a few like that and seems you just can't deal with them.

I have found, sometimes it's better to ask"what they want for it"first,so you don't insult them. Then you know if they are really interested in selling.

I agree. The black coupe will go a lot higher and the other one is a two door sedan so that's a whole different animal. I'm not saying the guy's dis***embled one with the 15 y/o rebuilt motor was worth 6K, but I don't see a lot of driver A coupes selling for 6K as stated either.

Making an offer with someone you don't know before asking what the price is is just stupid. Last two cars I bought I just paid the asking price and took them away. That way both parties are happy.

  17. Driver Model A's haven't sold for 6k in about 10-15 years around here.

You can make offers without offending. Play stupid. "Man, I don't know, I just saw it sitting there and thought it looked really cool and stopped by to ask"....

....."I really would like to have it but I'm afraid I'll offend you and I certainly wouldn't want you to get upset and decide to not deal with with me"......

    ........"I don't know,wow, all I have is $2500".

Sounds really lame but sometimes works. I've bought stuff that way before.

  19. I think Mel Gibson knew this old guy, didn't he???

  20. Here is what you do on your next trip; Bring along a Strawberry Rubarb pie and some whipped cream in a cooler. Also, bring along some soda pops and a couple of beers - depending on what he likes to drink. Tell him your sorry - that you did not mean to offend him, however ask him to please tell you about what kind of money he has in mind on these cars. Write it all down, then TRY to see what you can do.:D

  21. I'm confused is it gold or junk? sounds like you need a little respect for your elders and family to boot. sometimes you have to listen a lot, before you talk a little! hey it's a good lesson and those don't come cheap. I remember the one that got away from me 40+ years ago and I've never found another for sale yet....Jim

I apparently left a little out of my story. I made an offer of 3000 for the A. (I've been around cars a longgg time. I can gauge fair market value for my area) I was given a counter offer of 14,000 and a diatribe about the value of the piece of gold sitting before us (with a cracked frame, frozen motor, rotted tires and crunched rear.) Believe me, I have the utmost respect for my elders and appreciate the fact that the guy can ask anything he wants for a car. Just thought it was a kinda funny story with the Jewish Car Ring angle and all. I'm not MAD at an old guy cause he wouldn't sell me his car. Didn't mean to make it seem like it. And yeah, I shoulda gotten some picture. It was a beautiful sight. Oh, And the 32 was completely restored aside from sitting in the dust and dry rotting. I knew I didn't have a chance with it for the money I had.
