What happens to the stuff UPS looses?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harrison, Apr 19, 2007.

  1. Same thing here with my driver. Sometimes drops my stuff off as late as 9:00 PM. Must work on flex time, cause he's always late during hunting season. Pisses me off, because he's left some pretty valuable stuff outside, sometimes in the rain, without knocking. I'm usually home but he never knocks. Luckily I live in a good area. I wonder if this happens more often, in other areas, and the stuff quietly transfers ownership in the middle of the night.

I guess I've been pretty lucky with our UPS driver. He has left stuff on our back porch when we weren't home or taken it to a neighbor.

The only thing that pisses me off with UPS here is that we are less than 10 blocks from them and we get our stuff at 8pm. I've asked if they could just leave my items at their warehosue and I'll come get them and they said "nope".
One day they dropped off a box at my neighbor's house around 3pm and then at 8pm I get my box. Same driver, same truck and same sized boxes.WTF was up with that?

  3. At my old house they (UPS) used to leave packages at the end of my driveway. It was 1/4 mile long and I couldn't see the end of it. It would have taken less than 10 seconds for someone to swipe my stuff, and I would never know. It took 4 phone calls to get them to stop doing it. I cornered the driver one day and he said " I did it because it's difficult to turn around in your diveway and adds time to the delivery route. We only guarantee delivery to the address (mailbox)" I asked him "If it was your shit, would you leave it at the end of the driveway?" He said, "No".

I use USPS whenever possible now. At least they consistently deliver, and knock, at around 2 PM. Shouldn't have to look outside the door. to see if the package came, at 10 PM.

I sent a set of 18" Halibrand 12 spokes to a guy and I stuck the sticky label on like I always do and then taped over the whole box in clear tape like I always do and the box just plain disappeared somewhere in shipping. It was labeled and properly insured. They did pay the claim but it seemed very suspicious just because I ship all the time and there was absolutely no possible way that label came off or became unlegible. I had the exact same thing happen with a Latham supercharger. Finally they destroyed a Magnusson twin 4-71 blower setup that was professionally packaged and then shipped to the wrong address (the UPS Store put my label on someone else's package and vice versa.) I had it fully insured and they sent a call tag to pick it up and repackage it. They picked it up but did not repackage it very well and then they destroyed it while shipping it to the correct address. They admitted it but said that the package was only insured for the first delivery (to the wrong place) and not to the second one so they would only pay $100. that's when I found out that the UPS store and UPS have nothing to do with each other except in name. I sued both of them and won.

BROWN is brown no matter who's outhouse it's in. I've had enough "fun" with "Brown" that I try to ship with the F word whenever I can.

I've had a Hilborn setup for my Olds engine delivered by UPS to someone 2 blocks from my house even though it had my correct name and address on it. Thankfully the person looked me up in the book and let me know.... Another time I sent a clutch disc and pressure plate assembly to someone through the post office and when they got the package, it had turned into a set of wrenches! There was a sticker on the package that said it had been opened for inspection [why?], but apparently they were doing more than one at a time and it confused them.

I live in a neighborhood that is known for having at least one drag car, muscle car or hot rod on every block. It’s also known for being full of rednecks and Hell raisers. I used to get REAL bent when I’d come home and find parcels left on my front porch.

Anymore, when I know I’m to be expecting a parcel and I have to leave the house for ANY amount of time, I’ll a BIG note to leave any parcels at the house across the street. There lives a great retired couple that are happy to help out and receive parcels for me. Since doing this, I’ve yet to have a problem from anyone. Keep in mind that I receive parcels from UPS, USPS and FedEX regularly.

I don't leave notes for stuff because then people know I'm not home.

Also, USPS lost a package about a month ago from Eelco to me.

FWIW Eelco won't stand behind it and even file a claim, I am just out $40. The Post Office says the shipper has to file, and they won't do it. Bullshit.

Got a set of Manifold boots from ebay for my bike. the box weighed 2 pounds. I get a box delivered that weighs 42 pounds. I open it is full of books brand new for walmart. Bibles a couple of elvis books, baby name books, wedding books, I email the seller and asked if he missed up, he said we do not sell books. Put a claim in with UPS they said put the box out they will pick it up. They never did. Never saw my manifold boots either. Tried to sell the bibles on ebay 10 of them to recoup my looses, no luck.

Why would you order something to be delivered then leave? Do you do that with Pizza? I guess next week you're going to be pissing and moaning cause the UPS guy needed a signature for your $1000 package...Standard procedure on anything over $1000 and you weren't there to sign.

Packages that are left are for your conveniance. Has anything been stolen from your porch? If there was a problem then you would have to sign. After 3 attempts you have to go and pick it up...another chance for you to piss and moan!

Medicine? Anything other than vitamins needs a signature!

If you only knew the bullshit a UPS driver has to go through!

You got a 1z# I got people on the inside that can track it for you I know for a fact that if a claim is processed and a payment is made they throw your product in the trash when it is all said and done..And no it does not go to a warehouse or get auctioned off!!! And this happens alot!!!! Also number one rule do not ship anything that is unreplacable because they will only give you $350.00 for it even if it is worth $10,000 also always get the insurance if you are that concerned!!! And make sure that adult signature is required when they deliver this way they can not leave on your porch and run!!! you can refuse if it is damaged...but rember to be home because they only attempt to deliver 3 times and then it gets sent to the mysterious black hole warehouse

I've delivered shit as late as 11:00 at night. Why?? UPS's grand scheme is to give the drivers 12-14 hours of work and make them get it done in 10. Sometimes when they're short they give them more.

6 months of 12 hour day killed my back. That's why I am no longer with them.

Harrison...using your 1Z number where was the last place the axle was seen? If it's a small center you may have a chance. If it was a big hub your chances are slim. The hubs are huge and a person could get lost in one as easy as a package could.

Tips for guys when shipping something you don't want lost. Put a phone number and extra mailing label inside the box. In cases like the axle tape a label to the axle inside the box. This helps incas the label comes off.

Tape over your labels!! Keeps the label from coming off.

Pack your stuff to withstand a drop from 3 feet. Just incase shit falls off the conveyor belts.

Odds are nobody stole it. UPS has problems with people steeling jewelry and computors but axles are low on the desirable list.

Odds are it came out of the box and got seperated from it. It more than likely is headed to overgoods and will be lost to scrap.

Local UPS driver made a point of getting bit by a dog at least once a year. Think it was good for $2,000. per bite. Put it in his vacation fund.

Ive got 3 empty boxes that I recieved from Summit, got the package in timely order but no parts inside them. It was just a lousy double D shaft 36". After the 3rd time I told them I would pick it up in person. You can see were it punched a hole in the box and fell out, if its that heavy I cant believe someone wouldnt notice it coming out and hitting the ground. I have to say though that Summit never questioned it and promptly attempted to resend the part.

I work for FedEX........90% of the problems with damaged goods, missing parts, ripped boxes and shit like that is becasue the Senders package them like morons. An 1/8th inch of corrugated paper and two strips of tape are not going to hold your shit. I dont care what company you ship with...pack your goods the correct way and you wont have to worry about it. Over tape it and over pack it...you cant go wrong.

Second...insure everything. An extra 5-10 dollars to bump up your insurance is worth it dont you think? i mean seriously....if youre shipping something worth a couple hundred...spend the extra pennies.

Third....ask for a direct signature. yeah it can be inconvieient....but then again...if your shipping something worth a couple hundred bucks ...you dont want it sitting outside unattended. Believe it or not....a very good amount of "missing" or lost shipment packages that come up "delivered" are actually stolen from your front porch. if you cant be there to sign....ask for a HOLD at a FedEx/UPS/USPS location...then go pick it up when you can.

    Be smart about shipping.

For a few extra bucks you can always request a package to be sent with signature confirmation; The it cannot be delivered unless it is signed for. If you buy something and don't ask for insurance or signature confirmation then you take the risk. A companies liability ends when the shipper picks it up. I can't help but to think that for a few extra dollars in most of these cases. This post wouldn't exist.

Hey Suiside! How can we get in on the Overgoods Warehouse auctions. Are like items grouped together?

CLARK.. You are a little off kilter dude
First... when I first orderd the item they said it would ship out in a couple days... then said it was held up... then is shipping out later. Thats why the shipment coming when I'm expected to be gone.

Also about medicine. I get PRESCRIPTION medicine delivered all the time to my home with NO signature required. 90 days supplys at a time. SO not to be a smart ass,.. but you are out of school on that.
Thats another thing. A little bag like that the neightbood gods can just pick up and tote away.... and I never know when it is gonna show up. I order it a couple, 3 weeks or so before I run out and it just shows up one day.

YES Items HAVE been stolen,... and I even INSISTED no iems be left WITHOUT my signature... but UPS just does as it pleases and throws them down on the porch and walks off. IT IS NOT "my convience" when they throw stuff down and it gets stolen.
It's their JOB to get it delivered and see that it gets INTO MY HANDS. Even if they DO have to make three trips. THATS what they get paid for. And thats what they charge such high rates for. They are just trying to save themselves all a bunch of effort and couldn't care less. Simple as that.

Oh and finally.... I got a cousin that is a UPS delivery person... yeah they been doing it for about 20 years... oh,.. and I almost forgot to mention SHE's a GIRL. She's not one of those 'walk off and leave it type's" though..??

    HHuummm
really. Kinda strange. I don't pay for anything until it gets INTO my hands (charged on credit card is reversable). If a company sends me a $1,000 item and I get charged for shipping,... then I am already paying for it to come to me. IMHO the way I look at it. That means delivered to my door. WIth proof that I signed for it and received.
If UPS or FexEd just throws it down and walks off and leaves it and it gets stolen... I hope the shipper don't plan on me paying for it. The responsibility for me receiving it lies with them and whoever THEY designated to ship it to me. THAT decision was entirely out of my control.
As an added security on my end I have tried to make sure with FedEx and UPS that no packages are left WITHOUT signatures... if they fial to do that,.. that is ALSO out of my control.
SO if I don't actually get a package in my hands, and delivered in good condition,.. it won't be paid for.
Thats simple,.. and thats fair all around.

Ask Vaphead about the 2 pairs of 1932 frame rails that UPS lost,
How the hell do you lose a 18"x 18"x144" package.

That being said; I hear a lot of people complain about the cost of shipping and freight. If some companies charged you an extra 5.00 to ship with signature confirmation; would you stil buy from them?

  30. Guess I should have clarified a bit.

My package arrived here. It had the '32 wishbone in it but the axle went through a hole in the end of the box.

    The packaging was absolutely shitty.

I don't believe the fact that it came out in transit is UPS's fault. Not one bit. I'd just like to find it before it goes to overgoods.

I filed a claim today & realize that if (when) it isn't found in a few short days that they will pay the insurance & it'll be a done deal - & a forever lost Deuce heavy axle. I guess all the others just went up in value a bit.

I ship UPS all the time. I can pack a box like nobody's business. After shipping & receiving hundreds of packages, this is the first problem I've had (well, except for a neon sign that I knew would never make it).

Thanks for all the advice & the offer (you know who you are) to help behind the scenes.

    JH
