ok...i have a 49 delux 2 door and im sticking a 2002 chevrolet vortec 5.3 engine and auto trans outta a 02 silverado...the motor and trans will be easily fabbed in but im kinda scared about the wiring and F.I....anyone have any suggestions or know anyone that has done something simmilar...let me know...thanks
What he said. throw that thing away, sell it and get a real motor. If you want Fuel Injection, get a mechanical Hilborn setup on a Hemi... or a basic motor like a Nailhead, Rocket, Hemi, Flathead, Banger, SBC, Inline 6, Inline 8, Studebaker, Cadillac.... ...something of that nature. You will be better off. Trust Us
Finishing a 50 chevy pick up with a 5.3 yukon motor right now for a buddy,Used painless computer,and main wiring harnesses.Stainless steel tank with fuel pump.Not cheap!!!Also had to have the computer reprogrammed.Have to have electronic speedo as there is no provision for cable.All and All ...very expensive! Stick a carbureted v8 in it and call it good !
yeah, right. what these statements REALLY mean is that they don't have a fucking clue on what it takes... me either, but the 5.3 is a hell of a motor..... at least the one in my '00 chevy is..
Ive yet to mess with obd2 shit but ive done a 95 lt1 conversion using a stock ecu with a reworked harness and some other goodies if you want more info pm me. But like i said obd2 is a whole diffrent ball game then obd1 (pre96)
The motor is easy. Edelbrock just released a manifold and ignition package, but it's near $800. Then another $800 for the ECU to run a stand alone auto tranny. That is as cheap as it gets. EFI is even higher. Get out your wallet, or go "traditional". Grandma always said : If you ain't got nothin' good to say, don't say nothin at all!"
Here is some fun things we have had to do:Cut the passenger inner fender to mount the after market a/c compressor.If you dont modify the stock radiator you will have to buy a $100 water neck from speed and perfomance,it is adjustable.Reversed water pump fan would not fit,added electric.Make your own intake tube and filter with mas airflow meter.Some kind of adapter/module to convert speedo signal to whatever guage your using.Stock headers wouldnt fit ,bought Sandersons around $400.Originally the 2002 5.3 had four o2 sensors,reprogram computer to use only two o2 sensors,$250 to $400.Add resistor to alt because it was originally excited by the guage panel.And Lots of other fun stuff I cant remember right now....BUT RUNS LIKE A CORVETTE..............
Some people are asses about stuff,if they had that motor back in the 50's it would be considered traditional too.Like tomsilk said I cant help either but maybe the website of the show trucks can help you out,either way good luck.

The Gen III's are great reliable motors. You may have to swap around exhaust manifolds to get it to fit the framerails correctly. What did your '02 come out of? Truck or car? The camaro headers sometimes work or if you need a real tight fit use the SS truck headers ( the AWD chevy with the 6.0) are 2" narrower per side. You'll also need to get the wiring harness thinned down to only what you need. Hopefully you got everything from the donor. (MAF sensors, and what not). Go to vinichighperformance.com talk to roger at guy is full of lots of info on gen III motors. And you can send the brain off to Westers to get reflashed for more go, usually good for about 40 ponies. Dont let the haters get ya down, just never open your hood.

Great Motor, make sure you understand how the EFI works before you get too involved. It's not too hard, just complicated. Write everything down and keep track of it and you won't have any problems. Best way to avoid problems with the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) problems is to just use the '02 transmission as well.
Kind of funny, I have a issue of Rod and Custom from 1953 when they put a brand new 1953 Caddy motor in the HIROHATA merc for the cross country in a Kustom article, they got this motor new in the crate, and who says its not traditional to do a modern engine swap. I would love to put a 6.0 Chevy motor in my TRADITIONAL Kustom.
yeah why on earth would a person ever want an old car that was so reliable you could hop in, not pump the gas, not pull the choke, you could turn the key and start it right up, have a nice clean running reliable engine with good power, modern technology and plenty of aftermarket support for any parts you may need? putting a late model engine in an early body sure sounds custom to me, but i guess to fit in here yo u have to pull the fenders off cut the roof off and put either a small block chevy or flathead ford in it, do everything you can to make it look like a model A. good luck with the swap, i think it will turn out great and be a blast to drive.
I say what ever floats your boat. Anything you can get a good deal on is cool to me. It`s about using what ya got...Isnt it? You may wanna watch it though those engines, every single one i seen with high miles get rod knocks in them.
Somebody posted on here several days ago about a computer shop where you could send them your old computer to them, tell them what you are going to be doing with the motor and putting it into, and they can "turn off" the O2 sensors and other issues and sensors that might cause a problem in the future. I'm interested in this too because I'm planning to run a Vortec 4.3L from a S10 in my '29 Ford AA truck with the 700R4. I'm about the power of that motor (around 200hp stock), the reliability of the combination, as well as the availability of parts should something break down. Anyway, hopefully someone will chime in about that computer shop.
once you get that 5.3 sorted you will never look back, i put a 5.7 gen III in my 95 S10, it has great power and gets better fuel mileage then the 4.3 V6 by 30%, as for all the turds on this board, it sometimes seems like a mechanical amish community, run what you want let the naysayers blow all they want
thanks first off to all the guys that either had info, knew something about it, or just had some good advice....however...too all of you that frown, look down or think its not "traditional"....your a bunch of asses...why would you even waist yer time on writing anything...i guess thats where the ass comes in huh?...any ways...im gonna do what i set out to do and thats put the 02 silverado motor and trans out of my truck that i bought new in 02 and know everything that has ever been done to it... so when you guys are broken down w/ your "traditional" set up...i can pull over and give you a hand...than jump back into my car....start it right up...know its gonna get me where i wanna go and not even worry...m
Mechanically amish... Ha ha.. love that. I do like the trad. rod but I'm not a big fan of laying in the gravel on a rainy night off I-40 trying to figure out why my fifty year old mill won't run. Or trying to find a fuel pump for a nailhead at Auto Zone in Toadsuck Arkansas. I love old engines, but when I want to hop in and drive to California worry free, then I'll take the 'ol 38 with the 327/350. I'll save the flatty for local cruise nights. Especially with the gas being over $3/gallon this summer like predicted, I wish I had F.I. and a computer and an overdrive!!
tpis.com has ls1 conversion wiring hanress and I know they should be able to do them for the 5.3 too. And places like madz28.com can do tuning for the computer, hell I got a freind who owns Track Time Motorsports in MN and does all my tuning for my f.i street cars that can do what you need, pm if interested and I can get you some prices.
